Palworld Coal Locations: Where to Find Coal Nodes in 1.0 and How to Stop Farming by Hand
The quick answer: Palworld coal locations are densest in Twilight Dunes, which community maps count at 288 of 553 mapped nodes, more than every other region combined. Verdant Brook is second with 114. A Stone Pickaxe (Technology Lv 1) breaks any coal node, but the real fix is the Coal Mine at Technology Lv 37 for 5 Ancient Technology Points, which lets you farm coal at your base instead of travelling for it — IGN calls the Coal Quarry "by far the most convenient way to farm Coal in the game." Coal's job is Refined Ingots, made with Ore in an Improved Furnace, so site your base where both nodes spawn and you solve the mid-game bottleneck in one move.
Palworld left Early Access with the 1.0 update on July 10, 2026, which rebalanced crafting and base building and made coal nodes more common in the wilds. If you're following an Early Access hotspot list, that's why it stopped working.
What you need before your first coal run
- A pickaxe, any tier. A Stone Pickaxe (Technology Lv 1) breaks every coal node. Metal (Lv 11), Refined Metal (Lv 34) and Pal Metal (Lv 44) mine faster and return more coal per node.
- Heat-resistant gear for Twilight Dunes and Dry Sandy Beach runs. Twilight Dunes runs hot, and Dry Sandy Beach is listed as resist Lv 2.
- Technology Lv 37 and 5 Ancient Technology Points if you're going the Coal Mine route. Ancient Tech Points come from tower bosses, Alpha Pals and dungeon runs.
- A Mining Pal. Aegidron is the 1.0 ceiling at Lv 8; Astegon, Blazamut and the Knocklem line sit at Lv 7; Anubis (Lv 6) and Digtoise (Lv 4) are the easy early picks.
- 1.0-era data only. The Side by Side update (1.1) is announced for Winter 2026 with no exact date, so counts may shift again when it lands.
One caveat on sourcing: node counts and coordinates below are community map data, not official Pocketpair documentation. Coordinates are rounded, and you should verify them in-game with the map pin tool before committing a base.
Step 1: Choose your target, volume or repeatability
There are two ways to use the Palworld map, and the right one depends on whether you're stocking a single craft or settling in.
For volume, Twilight Dunes wins outright. Community maps count 553 coal nodes across 8 regions, and 288 of them, roughly 52%, sit in Twilight Dunes alone. Other community datasets differ: one 1.0 file extraction counts 827 static coal placements, so treat the total as map-specific rather than definitive. That's more than every other region combined. Verdant Brook is second with 114 nodes and Mt. Obsidian a distant third with 57. The remaining regions hold under 40 each between Bamboo Grove, the outlying isles, Sakurajima, Windswept Hills and Sea Breeze. One guide pins a Twilight Dunes hotspot at roughly (-100, -120), and the densest single cluster in the 553-node dataset is 10 nodes at roughly (320, 500) in Duneshelter (318, 497).
For a repeatable run, pick a cluster by level band. The map is organised into 38 clusters of three or more nodes, 252 nodes total, grouped by the level band you can survive there and counted inside one base radius. That last detail matters: each number is what a single base reaches, not what you can carry in one trip.
- Mid-game (Lv 10-20): 8 nodes at roughly (-170, -220) in Bamboo Groves, mild climate.
- Mid-game (Lv 20-30): 8 nodes at roughly (270, -220) in Gobfin's Turf, mild climate. This is the easiest repeatable run on the map.
- Late game (Lv 30-40): 7 nodes at roughly (-600, -720) in Dry Sandy Beach, but it's resist Lv 2 hot.
- Early game (Lv 1-15): the densest knot is only 3 nodes at roughly (55, -670) in No. 1 Wildlife Sanctuary. Fine for a first stack, not for farming.
The decision rule: if you need a large stockpile and can survive the heat, go to Twilight Dunes. If you want a route you'll run every session, take the Gobfin's Turf cluster at your level band and skip the desert entirely.
If you're still working through the opening hours, the Palworld 1.0 Beginner's Guide covers the progression order that gets you to these bands in the first place.
Step 2: Travel to the nodes and survive the run
Treat the in-game map pin tool as your route planner: pin the rounded coordinate, follow the marker, and confirm the nodes are actually there before you commit a trip. Coordinates are in-game map values, the same numbers the game pin tool shows when you mark a waypoint. That's the cost of working from community data.
For Twilight Dunes, set your pin and approach from the nearest fast-travel point you've unlocked in the desert region. Pack heat-resistant gear before you leave, because the biome runs hot and you'll be standing in it for a while.
If a run goes wrong:
- You're overheating and losing health. Leave the biome and equip Heat Resistant gear before returning — Twilight Dunes and Dry Sandy Beach run hot (Dry Sandy Beach is resist Lv 2).
- The pin lands on empty sand. The node data is community-sourced and may be stale. Move to the next cluster rather than mining the same spot twice.
Step 3: Site a base on top of the nodes
The permanent fix isn't a route, it's a base sited so coal nodes spawn inside the build zone. A Mining Pal then fills your chests while you play elsewhere. Among Palworld best base locations, the ones that matter here are the ore-plus-coal overlaps.
Base-location guides recommend spots where ore, coal and wood all spawn in the build radius, naming the peak above the Sealed Realm of the Guardian at roughly (180, -40) as the best all-round 1.0 spot. That's one guide's pick from a single community source, so verify it in-game.
The general principle is safer than any single coordinate: flat ground, resource nodes inside the radius, and defensible against raids. Prioritise ore-plus-coal overlap. You need both halves of the Refined Ingot recipe, and a coal-only base just moves the problem.
If it goes wrong:
- You built coal-only. Don't demolish. Add a second base at an ore cluster and pair the two supply lines, or relocate once you have the Coal Mine running.
- A raid wiped the base. Rebuild the Palbox and defensive walls, then the mining infrastructure, and reassign your Mining Pals to the Coal Mine.
Step 4: Unlock and build the Coal Mine at level 37
The Coal Mine (listed as Coal Quarry in some databases and in IGN's 1.0 guide) is an Ancient Technology unlock at level 37 costing 5 Ancient Technology Points.
Build cost: 70 Stone, 100 Coal and 30 Paldium Fragment, with one source also listing 10 Ancient Civilization Parts. Sources disagree on that last item, so check the build menu before you budget. If you're short on those parts, our Palworld Ancient Civilization Parts & Cores farming guide breaks down where each tier drops.
You need 100 Coal to build the thing that farms coal, so do at least one or two manual runs first. That's not a bug, it's the tutorial.
Staff it with your highest-Mining Pal. Tetroise carries a mining aura that grants a flat +1 Mining suitability rank to every other worker in the base, which is worth pairing with your best miner.
If it goes wrong:
- The Coal Mine isn't showing at Lv 37. Check the Coal Quarry alias in the technology menu, and confirm you have the full 5 Ancient Technology Points banked rather than partially spent.
- You're short on Ancient Tech Points. Run dungeons rather than grinding nodes. Our guide to How to Get Ancient Technology Points in Palworld lists the fastest methods and which unlocks to prioritise first.
- The mine is built but not producing. Employ a Pal with a high Mining work suitability to make the best use of it.
Step 5: Backup sources when you're short
Node mining is the volume method. Drops, dungeons, chests and merchants are supplements for when you're a few coal short of a craft.
- Pal drops: Blazamut, Blazamut Ryu and Pierdon drop coal as of 1.0. Blazamut and Pierdon are both found on Flamepulse Islet, east of the Dessicated Desert and south of the No. 3 Wildlife Sanctuary, so you can farm both in one trip. Blazamut Ryu is a Raid Boss summoned at a Summoning Altar, not a wild spawn.
- Caves and dungeons: coal is frequently found in caves, and dungeon chests and merchants top you up between runs.
Use drops when you need a handful for a single craft; use dungeons when you also need Ancient Technology Points. Don't build a dedicated coal-farming base the old Early Access way. The Coal Mine does the same job without eating a base slot.
Step 6: Spend the coal where it actually gates you
Seven recipes consume coal, and two of them gate everything after: Refined Ingot and Carbon Fiber. The rest are Coralum Ingot, Thermal Core, Blazamut's Talisman and the Meowmere pair.
Refined Ingots come from Coal plus Ore at an Improved Furnace, and that's the high-tier metal behind advanced gear and base parts. Stack coal earlier than it feels necessary, because late-game weapons, advanced armour and most schematic crafts trace back through Refined Ingot or Carbon Fiber.
Common mistakes that make coal feel worse than it is
- Following an Early Access guide. The 1.0 update rebalanced crafting and base building and made coal nodes more common in the wilds, so old hotspot lists are stale. Use 1.0-era maps only.
- Mining with the wrong pickaxe tier and calling it slow. A Stone Pickaxe opens every node, but higher tiers return more coal per node. Upgrade before you conclude coal farming is miserable.
- Building a coal-only base. You need Ore too. Site where both spawn or you've just added a second commute.
- Ignoring Mining suitability. Check the suitability rank before you assign.
- Trusting a single coordinate as gospel. The 553-node count and the (180, -40) base spot each come from one community source. Pin it, walk it, then commit.
- Forgetting the 100-coal build cost. You can't unlock your way out of mining without first mining.
Kit out your Refined Ingot production line next
With coal flowing from a base mine, the next bottleneck is Ore. Map your ore nodes with the same cluster logic and pair the two supply lines, then build the Improved Furnace and keep it fed. That's the point where coal stops being a chore and starts being infrastructure.
Level your Ancient Technology Points through tower bosses and dungeons so the next big structure unlock isn't a wall. Keep an eye on the Side by Side update (1.1), announced for Winter 2026, since node counts and coordinates may shift again when it lands. For everything else in the meantime, the Palworld hub collects the current guides and news.
