Chromite in Palworld is an endgame ore you cannot see, craft, or buy. You need a Metal Detector (Tech Level 58, built at the Production Assembly Line II) or Smokie's Harness (Tech Level 58, Pal Gear Workbench) to reveal hidden deposits, which cluster in Feybreak Caverns and on a handful of Palpagos Island spots. Mine the ore, then smelt 1 Chromite with 1 Hexolite Quartz in the Gigantic Furnace to make Hexolite, the alloy behind the bulk of the endgame recipe list. That last point matters more than anything else on this page. No merchant in Palworld sells Hexolite, so Chromite farming is a mandatory step in the endgame crafting chain, not a shortcut around it.
What you need before you start
Everything below assumes you are on Palworld 1.0 or later, the version that left Early Access on July 10, 2026. Feybreak is a separate free update, and Hexolite gear such as the Hexolite Helmet was introduced with the Feybreak update. If you are returning after a long break, the Palworld 1.0 Patch Notes Breakdown covers what changed.
Unlocks at Technology Level 58:
- Metal Detector, crafted at the Production Assembly Line II.
- Smokie's Harness, crafted at the Pal Gear Workbench, plus a Smokie Pal to wear it.
- Gigantic Furnace, unlocked for 5 Tech Points.
That single level gate unlocks all three, so treat 58 as the real starting line for this loop.
Materials to bank:
- Gigantic Furnace build cost: 150 Plasteel, 100 Polymer, 200 Flame Organ, and 12 Computer.
- Hexolite Quartz in stock. Chromite alone produces nothing; the two are consumed together at a 1:1 ratio, so line up a Quartz route before you start smelting.
- Comfort with level 50, 58 dungeon content if Feybreak Caverns will be your main farm.
Unlock the Metal Detector at Tech Level 58
Push your Technology Level to 58, then unlock the Metal Detector and make sure you have a Production Assembly Line II standing.
Carry it whenever you explore endgame areas. It reveals hidden Chromite deposits in dungeons and around certain islands, and the deposits are completely invisible without it. The marker has a quirk worth internalising early: it disappears if you walk too far from the deposit. Sweep slowly, watch for the ping, and mine the moment it appears rather than marking the spot mentally and moving on.
Treat the Detector as your default exploration tool once you hit 58. There is no reason to leave the base without it in Feybreak territory.
Craft Smokie's Harness as your second detector
At the same Tech Level 58, craft Smokie's Harness at the Pal Gear Workbench and equip it to a Smokie. Its Partner Skill flags nearby Chromite, giving you a mobile detection option that runs alongside your Pal team instead of your tool slot.
Neither method is strictly better. Use Smokie when you are already running a party for dungeon clears and want detection baked into the team. Use the Metal Detector when you want a free Pal slot for combat or utility. Because both share the same level gate, pick whichever fits your loadout rather than grinding for both at once.
If you are still tuning your party for endgame dungeon runs, the Palworld 1.0 Watering Guide is a useful reference for keeping your base running while you are out farming.
Farm the densest Chromite spots first
Head to Feybreak Caverns first. The dungeon set has 20 interior layouts running roughly level 50, 58, and those interiors hold the densest deposit clusters in the game. Clear bosses and loot chests on the same run so each trip pays out in more than ore.
Palpagos Island serves as your secondary source, but the game is unhelpful here: the Chromite item description names only "certain islands" without listing them, and that phrasing is the only in-game pointer available. Rather than sweeping the whole map blind, lean on a tracker to pin the open-world spots down, then work them between dungeon runs when you want a change of pace.
One map database, palworld.th.gl, counts 415 Chromite locations across Palpagos Island and Feybreak Caverns 1 through 20. Treat that as a tracker figure rather than an official count; different trackers may not agree. For route planning across the broader Palworld map, the Palworld Nightstar Sand Guide applies the same Feybreak routing logic to another endgame resource.
Top up Chromite from Pal drops
Chromite also drops from 2 Pals when defeated or captured, according to the item's own drop listing. That listing does not name the two species, and our research did not turn up a confirmed identification, so treat this as a lead to verify in-game rather than a settled farming route.
Watch your drop feed during normal dungeon clears and note which Pals cough up Chromite. This is a top-up source only, useful when you are a few ore short and do not want to run another dungeon, so do not build a farming plan around it.
Build the Gigantic Furnace and smelt Hexolite
- Unlock the Gigantic Furnace at Tech Level 58 for 5 Tech Points.
- Gather 150 Plasteel, 100 Polymer, 200 Flame Organ, and 12 Computer.
- Place the Furnace at your base.
- Feed it 1 Chromite + 1 Hexolite Quartz per Hexolite.
Keep that ratio balanced. If you over-mine Chromite and neglect Hexolite Quartz, the Furnace stalls on the second input and your ore sits idle.
Hexolite is craft-only, which means the Furnace is your only route to it (one tracker also lists Hexolite as a drop from 3 Pals). Spend the output on the advanced recipes it feeds. One community recipe database, pindrop.gg, counts 26 recipes that use Hexolite, against just 3 that call for Chromite directly, treat those figures as tracker counts rather than official totals, but the shape of the problem holds either way. Under-farming Chromite starves your entire endgame crafting chain, not just three items.
If you are still short on the technology side of the equation, our guide on How to Get Ancient Technology Points in Palworld covers the fastest sources and which unlocks to prioritise.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Farming Chromite without Hexolite Quartz. One ore makes nothing on its own. Stock both before a smelting session.
- Losing the Detector ping. Walking away un-marks the deposit. Mine immediately when it appears.
- Assuming a merchant sells Hexolite. It is craft-only, so no shopping trip will bail you out.
- Confusing direct and indirect use. Three recipes directly, 26 through Hexolite. Under-farming starves everything.
- Treating the 415 figure as gospel. It comes from one map database and may not match other trackers.
Next steps: stock Hexolite Quartz and plan your Gigantic Furnace build
The Furnace is only as fast as its slowest input, so map your Hexolite Quartz routes now and keep a buffer ahead of your Chromite stock. Bank the 150 Plasteel, 100 Polymer, 200 Flame Organ, and 12 Computer before you hit 58 so the structure goes down the moment it unlocks.
Then queue the Hexolite recipes you actually need, armour and weapons first, rather than smelting blind and discovering you have spent the alloy on decorative structures. If you are still filling gaps in your gear progression elsewhere, the How to Get Terraprisma in Palworld guide and The Ultimate Palworld Leather Farming Guide cover the earlier tiers.
Finally, keep one eye on the Side by Side update. Pocketpair announced it on October 20, 2026 for Winter 2026 with no feature list, so do not pre-farm Chromite on speculation about resource changes. Farm what the current build demands and let the patch notes tell you the rest.
Consider mods only if you are done with the grind
If you play on PC and want to skip the detection loop entirely, community projects claim to fill that gap:
- The Nexus "Chromite Mining Site" mod reportedly adds a level 62 base facility that produces Chromite with up to three Mining Pals.
- The Steam Workshop "Endgame Ore Pits" mod reportedly adds compact vanilla-style pits for Chromite and Coralum.
Both are community projects, not official features, and the specifics above come from their own listings rather than from Pocketpair, so do not plan a vanilla farm around them. Mods can also break with updates, so back up your saves before patching.
