What Are Ancient Technology Points?
Ancient Technology Points are a separate currency from regular Technology Points. They are used exclusively on the purple Ancient Technology tree, which contains specialized gear, tools, and structures you cannot obtain anywhere else. Key examples include the Egg Incubator for breeding, the Grappling Gun for mobility, the Feed Bag for carrying more food, and the IV-checking Glasses (tier 34, costs 4 ATP) that let you see a Pal's individual values for perfect breeding.
Regular Technology Points, by contrast, are used on the standard blue tech tree and come from two sources: six points per character level-up and one point per Fast Travel statue or Watchtower discovered. No matter how many chests you open or how many levels you gain, those blue points cannot be spent on Ancient Technology unlocks. With recent updates raising the level cap and adding more purple recipes, ATP has become the primary bottleneck for late-game progression.

How to Earn Ancient Technology Points
The only way to obtain Ancient Technology Points is by defeating bosses. Two types of bosses reward ATP:
- Alpha Boss Pals, These are the overworld mini-bosses marked on the map with a glowing icon. Defeating or capturing them grants a variable amount of ATP. Community data confirms that Panthalus, a low-level Alpha boss, rewards exactly 5 ATP.
- Tower Bosses, Each Tower Boss defeat yields a guaranteed 5 Ancient Technology Points. These encounters are repeatable, with bosses respawning after a set cooldown (typically a few in-game days or a real-time timer).
Chests, level-ups, fast travel discoveries, and regular Pal captures do not give ATP. If you see a guide claiming otherwise, it is likely confusing ATP with Ancient Civilization Cores, which can appear in treasure chests at the Oil Rig. Only boss kills produce Ancient Technology Points.
Efficient Farming Strategies & Routes
Because ATP is finite per boss cycle, efficient farming means minimizing downtime and targeting the easiest, fastest bosses first.
Step 1: Identify low-level Alpha Bosses. Panthalus is an excellent starting target. It spawns in a few consistent locations, is easy to defeat with mid-game gear, and rewards 5 ATP per kill. Other early Alpha Pals like Chillet or Kingpaca are also solid options.
Step 2: Integrate Tower Bosses into your rotation. Each Tower Boss gives 5 ATP regardless of difficulty, so even the early towers (Rayne Syndicate Tower, Free Pal Alliance Tower) are worth farming repeatedly. Set a timer for their respawn window.
Step 3: Establish a fast-travel route. Use your base teleporters and discovered waypoints to chain kills. For example, here's a sample route for mid-game players: Fast travel to the Tower of the Rayne Syndicate, defeat Zoe & Grizzbolt (5 ATP). Glide northeast to the grassy plateau where Panthalus spawns (about 20 seconds), then defeat or capture it for another 5 ATP. Teleport to the Free Pal Alliance Tower, defeat Victor & Shadowbeak (5 ATP). Wait 2, 3 in-game days for respawns, then repeat. Total time: roughly 15 minutes for 15 ATP.
Step 4: Gear appropriately. Tower Bosses require entering a small dungeon, so bring strong weapons, armor, and healing items. Alpha Pals are fought in the open world, where you can use terrain to your advantage.
For end-game players, note that Raid Bosses like Blazamut Ryu and Bellanoir drop Ancient Civilization Cores, not ATP. Do not waste time farming raids expecting ATP.

Best Ancient Technology Unlocks to Prioritize
ATP is precious, so spend it wisely. Here are the unlocks that offer the biggest return on investment, in order of priority:
- Egg Incubator, Early in the ancient tech tree, this is essential for breeding and hatching eggs. Without it, you cannot produce perfect Pals or duplicate rare ones. Top priority.
- Grappling Gun, A game-changer for mobility. It lets you scale cliffs, escape dangerous fights, and traverse the Palpagos Islands much faster. Unlock this as soon as possible.
- Feed Bag, Reduces the weight of food in your inventory, allowing you to carry more meals on long expeditions. When you are exploring for hours, this prevents encumbrance and keeps you fed.
- Glasses (Tier 34, 4 ATP), Lets you view a Pal's IVs (individual values). Vital for serious breeding. If you plan to min-max your team, this unlock pays for itself by saving countless eggs.
- Sphere Launcher and advanced armor, Later-game unlocks that boost combat effectiveness. Wait until you have the core tools above before investing in these.
Avoid spending ATP on cosmetic or niche unlocks until you have the essentials. Every point matters.
Ancient Technology Points vs. Ancient Civilization Cores
A common point of confusion involves Ancient Civilization Cores. These are a completely separate resource obtained from Raid Bosses, the Oil Rig main chest, and Pal Expeditions. They are used to craft items like the Ancient Relic Recycler, not to unlock tech-tree recipes. Do not spend ATP on recipes that actually require Cores, and vice versa. Always check the crafting menu before committing your resources.
If you see a guide that conflates the two, refer to the official Palworld Fandom Wiki for clarity. ATP comes only from boss kills; Cores come from raids and end-game content.
Mastering Progression with Ancient Technology Points
Treat every Ancient Technology Point like a limited resource, because it is. By focusing your farming on repeatable boss kills, especially Tower Bosses and low-level Alpha Pals like Panthalus, and prioritizing unlocks that directly improve survival, mobility, and breeding, you will maximize every point you earn. Remember that each boss only awards points every few days, so efficient routing is what separates a fast farmer from a frustrated one. Equip your Grappling Gun, hatch those eggs, and conquer the Palpagos Islands with confidence.
