Quick answer: The Mandate Encampment Outer Gate Key is not in the Village of Lu. It sits late in Pangzhen, a large region reached during Chapter 2. Progress the main story into Pangzhen, defeat Gu Wanyue (the Wailing Wraith) at the Pond of Fading Song bell, then descend into the well and follow the underground passage beyond her arena to pick up the key. Carry it back to the locked gate near the Village of Lu to open an entire optional region tied to side storylines and the perfect-ending route.

That lock you spotted minutes into Phantom Blade Zero is a deliberate tease. S-GAME's wuxia action RPG puts the Mandate Encampment gate in front of you almost immediately, then hides the key hours away in a later zone. Here is the full route, start to finish.

What you need before you start

  • A copy of Phantom Blade Zero, available on PS5, Steam and Epic Games Store. The digital launch was October 29, 2026, with PS5 physical editions arriving in 2027.
  • Main-story progress through the Village of Lu and into Pangzhen during Chapter 2.
  • Access to the Pond of Fading Song bell area, just before the Gu Wanyue boss fight.
  • Solid parry and dodge fundamentals. Gu Wanyue spends most of the fight incorporeal, so you break her stamina with parries and dodges before landing damage while she is stunned (per ShowGamer's boss guide).
  • Patience for a long round trip. The key is hours away from the gate it opens.

Step 1: Note the locked gate, then leave it alone

Shortly after you arrive in the Village of Lu, a cutscene shows Soul facing two paths. The left leads into the village, the right toward the Mandate Encampment.

The Outer Gate on the right-hand route is locked, and the key cannot be found anywhere in this region. Do not comb the village for it. Mark the gate as a backtrack target and push on with the story instead.

Step 2: Clear the Village of Lu and reach Pangzhen

  1. Defeat the final boss of the Village of Lu and complete the region to advance the story.
  2. Continue into Pangzhen, one of the game's larger regions, during Chapter 2.

Expect this stretch to take several hours, especially if you are hoovering up collectibles along the way. If you are chasing side content as you go, our Where to Find Pei in Phantom walkthrough covers one of the game's letter-delivery side quests.

Step 3: Push through Pangzhen to the Pond of Fading Song bell

Work your way through Pangzhen, progressing past the Tavern. Keep following the main route until you reach the Pond of Fading Song bell, which sits just before the Gu Wanyue boss fight.

Treat the bell as your landmark. The key route begins here.

Step 4: Defeat Gu Wanyue, the Wailing Wraith

Gu Wanyue is not one of the game's hardest bosses, but two attacks punish sloppy play:

  • The projectile. Parry it so it is sent back to hit her.
  • The Red Flash grab. Watch for the tell and be ready to dodge.

Because she is largely incorporeal, damage comes from depleting her stamina with parries and dodges, then striking while she is stunned.

Step 5: Descend the well and take the key from the passage beyond

  1. After the fight, interact with the prompt to descend into the well.
  2. Make your way up until you reach a room containing Puppets and other enemies. Deal with the enemies and pick up the glowing item in the middle of the room to obtain the Mandate Encampment Outer Gate Key.

The key is retrieved here, not as a direct boss drop. The kill opens access; the key itself is waiting past the arena.

One warning: do not confuse this with the separate Backstreet Courtyard Key, a different item in the same Gu Wanyue area that requires the Flaming Mane Phantom Edge (per Skoar and ShowGamer guides).

Step 6: Backtrack to the Village of Lu and open the Outer Gate

Return to the Village of Lu and take the right-hand path toward the Mandate Encampment, then use the key on the Outer Gate to unlock the region.

Inside is an optional zone with its own bosses, Memory Flowers, missable collectibles, Phantom Edges, secret items and side quests; the GameRant guide notes it is one of the shorter areas in the game with relatively few collectibles compared to Pangzhen. If you want to sweep the zone efficiently, our Where to Find Every Phantom Edge guide maps out the weapon pickups so you do not leave anything behind.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Searching the Village of Lu for the key. It is not in that region at all, and the detour costs hours.
  • Assuming the key drops straight from Gu Wanyue. The kill opens access, but the key itself is in the passage beyond her arena, down the well.
  • Skipping the Mandate Encampment as "just optional." The region is off the critical path but feeds several important storylines and the perfect-ending route. Completionists chasing that ending should not leave it behind.
  • Mixing up the Outer Gate Key with the Backstreet Courtyard Key. They are different items in the same area with different requirements.

Clear the encampment and secure the perfect ending

Opening the gate is only the first half of the job. Sweep the zone for Memory Flowers, Phantom Edges and collectibles before you leave. Finish the side quests based in the encampment as well, because they tie into the game's ending.

Cross-check your progress against the perfect-ending requirements before you move on, so the long trip back to the Village of Lu actually pays off.
