Phantom Blade Zero Recast Soul at the Last Minute, and Sonic the Hedgehog Is Now Your Assassin

In the trailers leading up to launch, Phantom Blade Zero protagonist Soul was voiced by up-and-coming actor Jay Maksenuk, best known for playing V in Once Human. Then the game shipped on October 29, 2026, and the voice in Soul's mouth belonged to somebody else. The Phantom Blade Zero recast of Soul happened so late that most players only found out by scanning the end credits, where Roger Craig Smith, the man behind Sonic the Hedgehog, Ezio Auditore, Chris Redfield and Batman, is credited as the English voice of the protagonist. S-Game announced the new addition to its English voice cast on the same day as the game's launch, with Roger Craig Smith as the official voice of Soul.

That is the mystery at the center of one of the year's most anticipated action games. And it is only half the story, because the rest of the cast is just as starry.

Phantom Blade Zero is S-Game's Unreal Engine 5 wuxia action RPG, the studio's first major global release. It debuted at the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023 and has been framed ever since as a flagship Chinese AAA title alongside Black Myth: Wukong. You play Soul, an elite assassin framed and hunted, with 66 days to live and a conspiracy to unravel in the Wulin.

The Phantom Blade Zero Recast of Soul, A Silent Swap at Launch

The facts are straightforward, even if the reasoning is not. Roger Craig Smith is the English voice of Soul in the shipped game, a detail confirmed by S-Game. He replaces Jay Maksenuk, best known as V in Once Human, who voiced Soul in every trailer and gameplay demo leading up to release.

The swap did not come through a formal casting announcement. It came through the credits. Game Informer heard Smith's performance during its review period, and TheGamer's reviewer spotted him in the end credits, which is how the story broke on launch day rather than weeks earlier. S-Game announced the new addition to its English voice cast on the same day as the game's launch; Game Informer reported hearing the voice switch during its review period and TheGamer's reviewer noticed Craig Smith listed as the voice of Soul in the credits.

That timing matters. Phantom Blade Zero had already been delayed once, pushed from its original September 9 date to October 29 for extra polish, and it Phantom Blade Zero launched on October 29, 2026 on PS5 and PC. The recast became public on the very day the game arrived, which means players comparing the marketing to the finished product are hearing two entirely different Souls. Older trailers still carry Maksenuk's performance. Boot up the game and you get Smith.

Who Is Roger Craig Smith? Gaming's Most Familiar Voice

If the name does not ring a bell immediately, the roles will. Smith has voiced Sonic the Hedgehog in most English-language media since 2010's Sonic Colors, a run that has made him one of the most recognizable voices in the medium. He is also Ezio Auditore in Assassin's Creed, Chris Redfield in Resident Evil, Batman in Arkham Origins, and Kyle Crane in Dying Light.

That is a resume built on fast-talking heroes, brooding antiheroes and the occasional blue blur. Now it belongs to a wuxia assassin with 66 days to live, which is a stranger and more entertaining juxtaposition than it first sounds. Soul is a dying man hunting the truth behind his own framing, and there is something genuinely fun about the fastest thing alive lending his voice to a character defined by a countdown.

Smith's take on Soul can already be heard in the official launch trailer, which is the cleanest way to compare his performance against the Maksenuk footage still floating around online.

The Question Nobody Has Answered, Why the Swap?

Here is where the story stalls. No reason has been given for the change. TheGamer says it reached out to both S-Game and Maksenuk, and Game Informer asked S-Game for comment; no public explanation has surfaced.

The plausible angles are all unconfirmed. A performance change late in development is one possibility, scheduling another, and a deliberate shift in creative direction a third. None of these has been verified, and S-Game has not offered a statement beyond confirming Smith's role.

What makes it stranger is Maksenuk's position. He is an up-and-coming actor, best known for playing V in Once Human, and he is now absent from the finished game without a statement of his own. The story remains an open question rather than a resolved controversy, and it is worth watching for an official word from either party.

Soul's World, the Rest of the Cast Is Just as Starry

The recast is not the only notable thing about Phantom Blade Zero's cast. According to the official pre-order announcement, Donnie Yen performs Mó Yuan, Soul's father and leader of the Bastion of Mó, through facial, voice and motion capture, and has served as a creative consultant since 2023. That is a genuine coup for a studio's first major global release, and it anchors the game's wuxia credentials in a way few productions could match.

Maggie Robertson, who played Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil 7, plays Mu Xiaokui in the English cast, rounding out a lineup that reads more like a blockbuster film than a debut action RPG. The game itself Phantom Blade Zero launched on October 29, 2026.

The Voice in Soul's Mouth

If you play Phantom Blade Zero this week, the voice you hear belongs to the same actor behind Sonic, Ezio and Batman. The actor you saw in the trailers is not in the game at all. That is a strange thing to sit with, and it is a reminder of how much of a character lives in a performance players spend years anticipating.

The recast is not a scandal so much as an unanswered question, and the door remains open for S-Game or Maksenuk to explain it. Until then, the only way to judge the change is to play it. If you have already hit the credits, the comparison is worth making: how does Smith's Soul stack up against the voice you spent three years expecting?
