Nintendo first revealed The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake during its June 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct with a cinematic trailer, and locked in a November 5, 2026 release date at The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct in September. It is now out. The Ocarina of Time remake launched exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, November 5, 2026, and the rollout was more interesting than a single midnight.

The game is out now worldwide, but it did not arrive everywhere at once. It was a staggered, local-midnight schedule, and that distinction shaped how the first 24 hours actually played out.

Region by Region: Ocarina of Time Remake Unlock Times as They Happened

Nintendo's own news post and eShop listings confirm the game is available now on Switch 2. The unlock times below reflect what actually occurred, as documented in post-launch coverage such as GameOverInteractive, rather than a formal Nintendo announcement of a single unlock hour.

  • Americas: 9:00 p.m. PT on Wednesday, November 4 (midnight ET), per post-launch guides.
  • UK, Europe, Japan and Australia: 00:00 local time on November 5.

Nintendo did not publish a single official unlock hour; some outlets reported US unlock as 12:00 a.m. ET.

That is a standard eShop schedule applied region by region. New Zealand unlocked first; California came last, roughly a full day behind.

The New Zealand Trick, and Why It Was Possible at All

The existence of the so-called New Zealand trick is the cleanest proof that the launch was staggered. Under a truly simultaneous worldwide unlock, switching your eShop region would achieve nothing except a currency conversion headache.

Instead, North American players who set their account to the New Zealand region could start playing roughly a full day before their local midnight.

The trick has become a familiar ritual around big Nintendo releases, and this launch confirmed the pattern once again.

Pre-Loads, File Size and the Switch 2 Price of Entry

Nintendo opened pre-loading ahead of launch, with downloads reported from October 29, so most pre-order buyers were ready to play the moment their region ticked over. The download was listed at 24.5 GB on the UK eShop and a 27 GB estimate on the US store before launch, with Nintendo's US listing showing 24.9 GB on launch day, so it is worth checking your console's storage before you commit.

Pricing sits at $59.99 / £49.99 / €59.99 on the eShop, with the physical edition cited at $69.99. For those still weighing up the commitment, our guide on How Long Is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake breaks down the campaign and completionist timings.

Midnight Launches in New York, San Francisco and London

Nintendo turned a digital unlock into a real-world occasion with three official events.

Nintendo NEW YORK hosted a midnight launch on Thursday, November 5 from 12:00 to 2:00 a.m. Nintendo SAN FRANCISCO ran a late-night event on Wednesday, November 4 from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m., timed to the 9 p.m. PT unlock. Both required a Warp Pipe Pass reservation, with bookings opening on October 26 at 3:00 p.m. PT / 6:00 p.m. ET on a first-come, first-served basis and a gift with purchase while supplies lasted.

In the UK, Nintendo partnered with Argos for a midnight launch at the Tottenham Court Road store in London, running through the night of November 4 into November 5. Attendees received a free replica of the original PAL N64 box, plus an ocarina key ring.

A 96 on Metacritic and One of the Year's Highest-Rated Games

The remake landed to a 96 Metacritic score, making it one of the year's highest-rated games per multiple outlets. It launched on November 5, 2026, a date GameSpot noted fell just before GTA 6.

For context, the project was announced during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct and its November 5 date was locked in at The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, which we covered in our guide to Times, Platforms, and What to Expect.

The launch version brings reimagined visuals, a refreshed orchestral soundtrack, voiced cutscenes, modernized controls, and a new Hall of Fallen Foes room for boss rematches (with 60 FPS and a jump button reported by Notebookcheck).

The Rollout Is Now a Matter of Record

The staggered midnight schedule is settled history: the Americas got the game at 9 p.m. PT on November 4, the rest of the world at 00:00 local on November 5, and the New Zealand trick worked exactly as predicted for those who wanted in early. The physical events in New York, San Francisco and London gave the launch a sense of occasion that a digital download alone rarely manages.

But the rollout details will fade faster than the game itself. What remains is a 96 on Metacritic and the consensus that this is one of the year's best-reviewed releases, which is the number that will still matter long after the last midnight queue has dispersed.
