All Happy Mask Shop Buyer Locations in Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Happy Mask Shop quest is a happy dayz of mask-selling: four masks to sell and exactly four buyers, these are all of them, and the game tells you almost nothing about who they are. Here is the short version: the Keaton Mask goes to the armored guard at Kakariko Village's north exit (15 Rupees), the Skull Mask to the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods (10 Rupees), the Spooky Mask to the boy in Kakariko Graveyard during the day (50 Rupees), and the Bunny Hood to the Running Man in Hyrule Field (one Gold Rupee, 200 Rupees), who only shows up once you hold all three Spiritual Stones.
You rent each mask from the Happy Mask Shop in Hyrule Castle Town square, which is open daytime only, and you must repay its cost to the salesman before he hands over the next one. These steps follow the Nintendo Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which launched on November 5, 2026.
Open the Happy Mask Shop
The shop sits in Hyrule Castle Town square, and it is only open during the daytime. If the door is shut, change the time to day and come back.
It starts doing business only after you have met Princess Zelda and handed her letter to the Death Mountain gatekeeper, which opens the passage to Goron City. Once that happens, the guard tells you the shop is now open.
The entire quest must be done as Young Link. If you have already become Adult Link, return to the past to finish it.
How the rental-and-repay loop works
The salesman rents you one mask at a time and tells you its going cost. After each sale you must pay him that cost back before he gives you the next mask.
Your customers do not always pay the going cost, so you will often foot the difference yourself. Keep Rupees on hand.
Masks are rented and sold in a fixed order: Keaton Mask (10 Rupees), Skull Mask (20), Spooky Mask (30), Bunny Hood (50).
Four masks are sold in the trading sequence. The four reward masks (Goron, Zora, Gerudo and Mask of Truth) come afterward, making eight masks total obtainable.
All four buyers at a glance
There are exactly four buyers in the quest; these are all of them.
| Mask | Rental cost | Buyer | Location | When | Payout |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keaton Mask | 10 Rupees | Armored guard | Kakariko Village north exit (Death Mountain Trail gate) | Any time | 15 Rupees |
| Skull Mask | 20 Rupees | Skull Kid | Lost Woods, first left from the Kokiri Forest entrance; stand on the stump opposite him | Any time | 10 Rupees |
| Spooky Mask | 30 Rupees | Boy among the gravestones | Kakariko Graveyard | Daytime only | 50 Rupees |
| Bunny Hood | 50 Rupees | Running Man | Hyrule Field, broad oval loop around Lon Lon Ranch | After all three Spiritual Stones | 1 Gold Rupee (200 Rupees) |
Keaton Mask: the Kakariko gate guard
Your first customer is the armored guard standing at Kakariko Village's north exit, the gate that leads to Death Mountain Trail.
Wear the Keaton Mask and talk to him, and he pays 15 Rupees. This is the easiest sale of the four: it is the first mask you are given and the guard is a fixed, easy-to-find NPC.
Skull Mask: the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods
From the Kokiri Forest entrance to the Lost Woods, take the first left to reach the Skull Kid's area.
Stand on the stump opposite him while wearing the Skull Mask to make the sale. He pays only 10 Rupees, half the 20-Rupee rental cost, so you take a loss on this one.
Spooky Mask: the boy in Kakariko Graveyard
The buyer is the boy walking among the gravestones in Kakariko Graveyard.
He only appears during the daytime, so wait or change the time if he is not there. The kid pays a hefty 50-rupee price, so you don't have to give the salesman your own money this time — you even get 20 rupees for yourself.
Bunny Hood: the Running Man in Hyrule Field
The Running Man only appears after you have collected all three Spiritual Stones, which means after finishing Dodongo's Cavern and Jabu-Jabu's Belly.
He runs a broad oval loop around Lon Lon Ranch in Hyrule Field. Equip the hood, catch up to him on his loop around Lon Lon Ranch, and he'll offer a gold rupee for it. He pays one Gold Rupee worth 200 Rupees, by far the biggest payout of the quest.
What you unlock after all four sales
Once all four masks are sold and repaid, the shop lets you borrow the Goron, Zora and Gerudo Masks and the Mask of Truth.
The Mask of Truth lets Link hear Gossip Stones and read NPC thoughts.
Bonus Forest Stage upgrades
The Lost Woods Forest Stage holds two extra rewards for mask collectors. According to TheGamer's Happy Mask Shopkeeper guide, showing the Skull Mask at the Lost Woods Forest Stage earns a Deku Stick capacity upgrade, and returning with the Mask of Truth earns a Deku Nut upgrade.
The Forest Stage grotto route is separate from the first-left path to the Skull Kid, so do not confuse the two. The Skull Kid sits down the first left; the grotto is its own detour.
Finish the quest before you grow up
The four sales must be done as Young Link. Pull the Master Sword first and you will be making a trip back to the past just to hand a mask to a guard.
Bank the Gold Rupee from the Running Man, collect the Mask of Truth, and you walk away with the biggest single payout of the quest plus a tool that opens up every Gossip Stone in Hyrule.
