The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has two ending-changing romances, Yennefer of Vengerberg and Triss Merigold, and five self-contained flings: Keira Metz, Madame Sasha, Jutta an Dimun, Shani in Hearts of Stone and Syanna in Blood and Wine. The one rule that matters: declare love to Yennefer and Triss in the same playthrough and the quest It Takes Three to Tango leaves Geralt alone for good. Every other combination is safe.

The Remastered edition, released on September 29, 2026, bundles both expansions, so all seven options are reachable in one package. Older copies work too, provided Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are installed.

What you need before you start

  1. A copy that includes the expansions. Shani and Syanna do not exist in a save without them. The Remastered edition ships with both.
  2. Story progress. Keira Metz opens first in Velen. Triss and Sasha sit in the Novigrad storyline. Yennefer and Jutta an Dimun are in Skellige. Shani requires Hearts of Stone, Syanna requires Blood and Wine.
  3. Manual saves before each romance window. The Remastered map tracking can find an untracked quest, but tracking it does not protect it from a story cutoff. Save manually.

Rough level guidance, per a single community guide (gamertagmythras): Keira's chain around level 6, Triss's quests at 12 and 14, The Last Wish at 15, Jutta's duel at 19, High Stakes at 26, Shani's wedding sequence at 33 and Beyond Hill and Dale... at 47.

Choose between Yennefer and Triss before you commit

These two are the only romances that affect the ending. Lock one in and you get an extra epilogue cutscene showing Geralt's life with her. Both chains have hard deadlines, and both are voided if you advance the main story too far.

Triss Merigold

  1. Complete the main quest Count Reuven's Treasure to unlock the side quest A Matter of Life and Death. Triss is found in Novigrad during the Witch Hunters' persecution of mages; start the quest Pyres of Novigrad to find her.
  2. At the masquerade, after you find Albert Vegelbud, Triss runs into the labyrinth. Follow her and pick [Kiss Triss]. This is a timed choice, so do not hesitate.
  3. Start Now or Never and agree to help Triss with the departing mages.
  4. At the port before she sails for Kovir, choose "Stay with me" and then "I love you". The romance scene follows.

Skip the kiss and the romance never begins, no matter what you say at the port. The whole chain must be finished before The Isle of Mists. If you missed it, reload your save from before the masquerade.

Yennefer of Vengerberg

  1. In Skellige, begin The King is Dead - Long Live the King at Kaer Trolde. When Yennefer asks you to think of the first thing that comes to mind, answer "Damn, I wanna kiss you, Yen."
  2. When you choose an outfit for the funeral feast, take the black and white one. Back in her room, respond with "Wouldn't mind watching..."
  3. After the earth elemental fight in the laboratory, as the room fills with gas, choose to kiss her. She teleports you both into her bedroom.
  4. Agree to help her in The Last Wish, a level 15 secondary quest in Skellige, and affirm Geralt's feelings at the end.

The Last Wish is the quest that actually locks the romance. It must be done before you take Uma to Kaer Morhen in Ugly Baby. If you missed it, reload your save from before Ugly Baby.

Avoid the It Takes Three to Tango trap

Telling both sorceresses you love them triggers It Takes Three to Tango. They see through the deception, both walk away permanently, and Geralt finishes the game alone - after a memorable night chained to a bed in the Kingfisher Inn. There is no way back once it fires.

It is the single most common romance mistake in the game, and it usually happens the same way: a player romances Triss in Novigrad, then finishes The Last Wish out of curiosity. The only fix is a save from before the second declaration.

Staying single carries no penalty. Decline both and every fling below remains open. Keep a manual save before each declaration so you can walk one romance back if you change your mind.

Romance Keira Metz in Velen

  1. Progress her Velen chain: A Towerful of Mice, then A Favor for a Friend.
  2. The fling is offered during A Favor for a Friend. During the dinner scene, when Keira asks about being friends with benefits, respond "Don't have to ask me twice," then use your Witcher Senses to find her.
  3. Her window closes at The Isle of Mists, same as Triss's.

It is a one-time encounter that does not block Triss or Yennefer. Your choices around Keira also decide whether she survives and can be sent to Kaer Morhen, so do not rush the dialogue. If you missed the fling, reload your save from before A Favor for a Friend.

Pick up the Novigrad and Skellige flings

  • Madame Sasha: enter the High Stakes Gwent tournament at the Passiflora in Novigrad and stay in the tournament to its conclusion. Stray from the Passiflora and the chance is gone.
  • Jutta an Dimun: complete her conditions and win the duel in Iron Maiden on Skellige, then accept her invitation. Winning the fight alone is not the encounter, and you get one duel and one chance.
  • Passiflora courtesans: paid encounters in the Novigrad brothel with no story consequences if you want a no-strings option.

None of these affect the ending or either main romance. The only two options in the entire game you cannot pursue in the same playthrough are Yennefer and Triss. If you missed Sasha or Jutta, reload your save from before the tournament or the duel.

Romance Shani in Hearts of Stone

  1. Play the expansion's wedding sequence in Dead Man's Party and A Midnight Clear.
  2. The encounter is triggered by pursuing Shani's romantic dialogue during the wedding; it is optional and self-contained. The window closes once the wedding sequence ends, so do not leave the area before the relevant conversation.
  3. Because the Remastered edition bundles Hearts of Stone, you can play this sequence in the same save as your main-campaign romance without conflict.

If you missed it, reload your save from before the wedding sequence.

Romance Syanna in Blood and Wine

Syanna, or Sylvia Anna, is the romance option in The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine, tied to the expansion's main storyline around the quest Beyond Hill and Dale.... The opportunity is a single dialogue window after the Cloud Giant encounter. Miss it and there is no second chance; reload your save from before the Cloud Giant fight.

Like Shani, she is entirely separate from the Yennefer and Triss decision and cannot void it.

A note on Songs of the Past

CD PROJEKT RED gave a first look at Songs of the Past at Gamescom on August 25, 2026. The paid expansion is planned for 2027, set in the new region of Letten and focused on Geralt's friendship with Dandelion. It is co-developed with Fool's Theory, and you can read the full breakdown of The Witcher 3 expansion here.

Reports point to a new love interest named Lilla in that expansion. That is currently a single-source claim, so treat it as unconfirmed until CDPR details how the romance system works. No exact release date has been announced; some storefronts list 31 December 2027, but CD PROJEKT RED has not announced an exact date.

The mistakes that cost players their ending

  • Declaring love to both sorceresses, usually by romancing Triss in Novigrad and then finishing The Last Wish out of curiosity. This is the trap that costs you both. Recovery: reload your save from before the second declaration.
  • Treating the timed kiss in A Matter of Life and Death as optional. Skip it and the Triss romance never starts. Recovery: reload your save from before the masquerade.
  • Assuming Jutta's duel is the romance. The encounter only happens if you follow up on her invitation afterwards. Recovery: reload your save from before Iron Maiden.
  • Leaving romance quests untracked and advancing past The Isle of Mists or Ugly Baby, which silently voids them. Recovery: reload your save from before the cutoff quest.
  • Expecting Keira, Sasha, Jutta, Shani or Syanna to change the ending. Only Yennefer and Triss do.

Lock in your ending and plan the second run

Save immediately before The Last Wish and before Now or Never. That single habit lets you watch both romance epilogues without replaying the campaign, and it is the cheapest insurance in the game.

If you want the alone ending for a roleplay run, romance both deliberately - just know the Kingfisher Inn scene is the price. Otherwise, commit early, finish your chosen chain before its cutoff, and treat every fling as a free bonus rather than a risk.

Check that your install includes both expansions so Shani and Syanna are available in the same save. For everything else on Geralt's last contract, the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt hub collects our news, guides and community coverage in one place.
