Terraria wings are the accessory that changes how you move through the game, and almost all of them are locked behind Hardmode. There is exactly one exception. Fledgling Wings are the only Pre-Hardmode wings in the game: Journey Mode characters start with a pair, and everyone else can pull them from Skyware Chests, Sky Crates and Azure Crates. Once you beat the Wall of Flesh, Angel Wings and Demon Wings give you identical stats (1.67 seconds of flight, 53 tiles of height, 32 tiles of reach, 150% speed), and both are crafted from Souls of Flight plus a feather. Leaf Wings, bought from the Witch Doctor in the Hardmode Jungle at night after Plantera, push height to 81 tiles and reach to 34 tiles for 1 platinum (150 gold on some versions).

If you are new to the game, wings are accessories that let you fly for a limited time before you start falling. They are the single biggest mobility upgrade in Terraria, and most of them only appear after Hardmode begins.

Fledgling Wings, the Only Pre-Hardmode Wings

Fledgling Wings break the rule that wings are Hardmode-only. You get them one of two ways:

  1. Create a Journey Mode character. You begin with a pair already in your inventory.
  2. Find them in the world. They appear in Skyware Chests, Sky Crates and Azure Crates.

They are available on PC, Console, Mobile and tModLoader.

Their flight profile is deliberately modest: 0.42 seconds of flight time, 18 tiles of height, 15 tiles of horizontal reach, and 150% horizontal speed. That clears early terrain and saves you from a few bad falls, but it does not replace a grappling hook or a Cloud in a Bottle. These are the weakest numbers in this comparison, and that is the point: they are a taste of flight, not a Hardmode substitute.

Terraria Wings Stats Side by Side

All figures below use tiles for height and reach and percentages for horizontal speed, so treat them as a reference point rather than a universal constant.

Wings Flight time Max height Horizontal reach Horizontal speed How to get
Fledgling Wings 0.42 s 18 tiles 15 tiles 150% Journey Mode start, Skyware Chests, Sky Crates, Azure Crates
Angel Wings 1.67 s 53 tiles 32 tiles 150% Souls of Flight plus a feather (see below)
Demon Wings 1.67 s 53 tiles 32 tiles 150% Souls of Flight plus a feather (see below)
Leaf Wings 1.67 s 81 tiles 34 tiles 150% Witch Doctor, Hardmode Jungle at night, after Plantera, 1 platinum (150 gold on some versions)

The headline here is that Angel Wings and Demon Wings are statistically identical. Pick whichever fits your character's look, because the numbers will not decide it for you.

How to Get Angel and Demon Wings

Angel Wings and Demon Wings are crafted from Souls of Flight plus a feather.

Gather the Souls and the feather, craft the pair that matches your character, and you have your first real flight accessory.

Angel Wings and Demon Wings: Identical Twins

Angel Wings and Demon Wings share every stat: 1.67 seconds of flight, 53 tiles of height, 32 tiles of horizontal reach, and 150% horizontal speed. There is no mechanical reason to prefer one over the other.

What matters is the jump from Fledgling Wings. You go from 0.42 seconds to 1.67 seconds of flight, and from 18 tiles of height to 53. That is a meaningful change in how you approach terrain, a Terraria boss fight and vertical exploration, which is why crafting a pair early in Hardmode is worth prioritising.

How to Buy Leaf Wings From the Witch Doctor

Leaf Wings are the strongest of the four sets covered here in terms of height and reach, and they are straightforward to buy once you meet the requirements. In order:

  1. Enter Hardmode by defeating the Wall of Flesh.
  2. Defeat the Queen Bee so the Witch Doctor can spawn, build housing in the Jungle biome, then defeat Plantera and buy the wings at night.

The price is 1 platinum (150 gold on some versions); TheGamer lists it as 1 platinum / 100 gold and gives 53 blocks height and 32 mph for Leaf Wings.

What you get is 1.67 seconds of flight time, the same as Angel and Demon Wings, but 81 tiles of height and 34 tiles of horizontal reach. That makes Leaf Wings the tallest of this group, at the cost of no extra flight time over the Angel and Demon pair. If you want to cover distance and clear tall obstacles, they are the pick.

What Comes Next: Soul of Flight Upgrades

If you want more flight time than Angel, Demon or Leaf Wings offer, the Soul of Flight recipes are the natural next step. Frozen Wings require 1 Ice Feather, dropped by the Ice Golem, a rare enemy that spawns in the Ice biome during a blizzard, plus 20 Souls of Flight. Harpy Wings require 1 Giant Harpy Feather plus 20 Souls of Flight. Both offer 2.17 seconds of flight and 67 tiles of height, beating Angel and Demon Wings on both counts. Steampunk Wings, sold by the Steampunker NPC, go further still at 3 seconds of flight and 107 tiles of height. These are worth knowing about, but the four wings above are the ones that matter for your first Hardmode flights.

Picking Your First Pair of Wings

The decision comes down to where you are in the game:

  • Pre-Hardmode: Fledgling Wings, from a Journey Mode start or from Skyware Chests and crates.
  • Early Hardmode: Angel or Demon Wings, whichever feather you find first.
  • Vertical reach: Leaf Wings from the Witch Doctor once Plantera is down.
  • More flight time: Frozen or Harpy Wings from Souls of Flight.

Wings make boss fights and traversal noticeably easier, so it is worth crafting a pair as soon as Hardmode starts rather than waiting. If you are still gathering materials, the Terraria Fishing Poles guide covers crates and fishing power.
