Terraria Fishing Poles: Every Rod, Fishing Power, and How to Fish in Lava

Your first fishing pole in Terraria is the Wood Fishing Pole, crafted from 8 Wood at any crafting bench. From there, the eleven rods climb in fishing power: Reinforced (15%), Fisher of Souls (20%), Fleshcatcher (22%), Chum Caster (25%), Fiberglass and Scarab (30%), Mechanic's Rod (35%), Sitting Duck's (40%), Hotline Fishing Hook (45%), up to the Golden Fishing Rod at 50%, which cannot be crafted. It is an Angler quest reward after 30 or more completed quests. Lava fishing needs a specific enabler: the Hotline Fishing Hook, a Lavaproof Fishing Hook accessory on any rod, or Underworld bait caught with a Lavaproof Bug Net.

Fishing in Terraria is a self-contained progression loop that pays out in ores, potions, accessories and crates long before you touch a boss. This guide covers all eleven fishing poles, how fishing power actually works, and the three confirmed routes into lava.

What fishing power and velocity actually do

Fishing power is your baseline chance of landing a catch. Bait power, accessories, time of day, weather and pool size all stack on top of the rod's number, so the pole is one input, not the whole formula. A high-tier rod on a tiny puddle still fishes badly.

Velocity is how far your bobber flies. Higher velocity means you can reach deeper water from the bank without wading in, which matters on oceans and large underground lakes.

Crates are the real prize. Any large body of water in any biome, surface or underground, can produce crates holding weapons, accessories and even mounts. That is why fishing stays worth doing after your gear outclasses the fish.

Only three rods are crafted personally: Wood, Reinforced Iron/Lead, and Demonite/Crimtane (BisectHosting says four rods are craftable as of Update 1.4.5). Everything above that comes from enemy drops, crates, NPCs or the Angler.

The Angler NPC, found at the Ocean, hands out one daily quest fish per character and gates the best rod rewards. Rescuing him early is the single highest-value fishing move you can make.

Every fishing pole, its stats and how to get it

Here is the full rod list with fishing power, velocity and source. Eleven poles, in progression order.

Pole Fishing Power Velocity How to get it
Wood Fishing Pole 5% 9 8 Wood at any crafting bench
Reinforced Fishing Pole 15% 11 8 Iron/Lead Bars at any anvil
Fisher of Souls 20% 13 8 Demonite Bars at any anvil
Fleshcatcher 22% 13.5 8 Crimtane Bars at any anvil
Chum Caster 25% 15 Drop from Wandering Eye Fish or Zombie Merman; doubles enemy catch chance during a Blood Moon
Fiberglass Fishing Pole 30% (BisectHosting lists 0%; TheGamer's table gives 30%) 14 Loot from fished Jungle crates (Bramble/Ivy/Jungle)
Scarab Fishing Rod 30% 15 Loot from fished Desert crates (Mirage/Oasis)
Mechanic's Rod 35% 15 Buy from the Mechanic for 20 Gold, only with the Angler present, and only during a waxing or waning crescent or gibbous moon
Sitting Duck's Fishing Pole 40% 16 Buy from the Traveling Merchant for 35 Gold, after Skeletron is defeated
Hotline Fishing Hook 45% 16.5 Low-chance Angler reward after 25+ quests in Hardmode
Golden Fishing Rod 50% 17 Angler reward after 30+ completed quests, not craftable

Two rows are worth flagging. The Chum Caster is a Blood Moon tool: its bonus doubles your odds of hooking enemies, which is either exactly what you want or exactly what you do not. The Mechanic's Rod is the fiddliest purchase in the game, since it needs the Angler housed and a specific moon phase before it appears in her shop.

The Fiberglass and Scarab rods sit at the same 30% but come from different crate pools, so which one you get first depends on where you fish. Jungle and Desert crate runs during early Hardmode are the fastest way to close the gap between your crafted rods and the 40% tier.

Get the Golden Fishing Rod (it is not crafted)

The Golden Fishing Rod is earned only through the Angler's quest line, with the threshold at 30 or more completed quests. You cannot craft it; it is earned only as an Angler quest reward.

Quest progress is tracked per character and per world, so starting a new character resets your count toward the rod. If you have been hopping between worlds, that is why the reward has not landed.

In multiplayer, every player gets an independent Angler quest, so each person builds their own progress. Nobody can carry you to 30 quests.

At 50% fishing power it is the endgame pick. If a boss fight hinges on a rare catch, this is the pole you bring.

Mid-game stand-ins while you grind quests: the Fiberglass Fishing Pole at 30%, and the Fisher of Souls at 20%.

Fish in lava: the three working routes

Lava fishing is gated behind specific items rather than a generic rod upgrade. There are three routes, and all of them work. (Some community guides also claim the Golden Fishing Rod can fish in lava; other sources dispute this, and the rod guides used here do not list it as a lava rod.)

  1. The Hotline Fishing Hook. A Hardmode Angler reward with a low drop chance after 25 or more quests. This is a confirmed lava rod and the cleanest long-term answer, since it needs no accessory slot.
  2. The Lavaproof Fishing Hook. An accessory that drops from Obsidian and Hellstone Crates and lets any rod fish lava. It must be equipped in an accessory slot to work, or use the Lavaproof Tackle Bag upgrade to combine it with other fishing gear.
  3. Underworld bait. Craft a Lavaproof Bug Net from a Bug Net plus 15 Hellstone Bars at a Hellforge, then catch Magma Snails, Lavafly or Hell Butterfly. This is the earliest route available, since it needs no Angler grind and no crate luck.

Bait and accessories: the prerequisites

No rod fishes without bait. Bait is consumed with every cast, so a full stack is a resource you maintain rather than a one-time unlock. You can catch it with a Bug Net, worms from dirt and stone, fireflies at night, butterflies by day, buy it from the Merchant, or pull it from crates and pots. Bait also carries its own bait power, which stacks directly onto the rod's fishing power.

Accessories are the other half of the setup. The Lavaproof Fishing Hook, the High Test Fishing Line and the Tackle Box all apply their bonuses only when slotted in an accessory slot; carrying one in your inventory does nothing. The Angler hands out several of these as quest rewards, which is another reason to run his quests early.

Make a cast land: pool size and common failures

A valid pool needs at least 75 connected tiles of water for good catches, and ocean fishing wants at least 1,000 tiles (per community guides; not stated in the primary rod guides). Anything smaller still produces the occasional catch, but the quality and crate odds fall off hard.

Shallow water and an empty bait slot are the two most common reasons a cast fails outright. Check the bait slot before you blame the pool.

Do not cast into Shimmer. A bobber touching it afflicts you with the Shimmering debuff, causing slow falling and phasing through blocks. It is a genuinely dangerous cast if you are near a Shimmer pool with mobs around.

Fishing power is composite. Rod, bait, accessories, time of day, weather and pool size all feed it, so a better rod alone will not carry a bad pool. Build the pool first, then upgrade the rod.

The rods worth chasing, in order

If you want a short list rather than the full table: craft the Wood Fishing Pole the moment you have 8 Wood, because fishing starts paying immediately in crates and potions. Upgrade to Reinforced Iron or Lead once you have an anvil, then push toward the 30% tier through Jungle or Desert crates. Rescue the Angler at the Ocean as early as you can and run his daily quest every session; that is the only path to the Hotline Fishing Hook and the Golden Fishing Rod.

For lava, do not wait on Angler luck. The Lavaproof Bug Net route costs 15 Hellstone Bars and a Bug Net, and it opens Underworld fishing the moment you can survive down there. Everything else follows from having a big enough pool and bait in the slot.
