Stardew Valley Lingcod: Where to Catch It and How to Beat Its 85 Difficulty
You can only catch a Lingcod in Stardew Valley during Winter. Cast in the river through Pelican Town or Cindersap Forest, or in the Mountain Lake, in any weather, and at any time of day. Its difficulty rating of 85 makes it one of the hardest non-legendary fish in the game, so sort out your rod, tackle and fishing level before you ever hook one.
That 85 rating is the whole story here. Plenty of players find the Lingcod during their first Winter, lose it at the minigame, and assume they did something wrong with the location. They didn't. The fish is simply strong enough that a bamboo pole and an empty tackle slot will lose the fight most of the time.
What you need before you cast
- Winter on your save. The Lingcod will not bite in Spring, Summer or Autumn under normal conditions. Magic Bait is the one documented way around that.
- A Fibre Glass Rod or better. It is the minimum sensible tool for a fish this strong.
- An Iridium Rod if you plan to use tackle. Both the Cork Bobber and the Trap Bobber require it to equip, and those two items change the fight more than anything else on this list.
- Fishing level 8 or higher. Guides recommend waiting until you're at fishing level 8 before attempting Lingcod seriously; lower levels can technically land it, but you're setting yourself up for frustration. (Note: level 6 is the requirement for buying tackle from Willy's shop.)
- Bait stocked in advance from Willy's shop on The Beach, plus energy-restoring food. Winter sessions run long.
- Optional: Magic Bait if you want Lingcod outside Winter, and access to Krobus' Wednesday stock or the Traveling Cart as a non-fishing fallback.
Fish the right water in Winter
Three bodies of water produce Lingcod, and all of them work in any weather. Rain, sun or storm makes no difference, so don't sit at home waiting for a clear day.
- Pelican Town river. The most convenient spot. Head south from your farm and cast anywhere along the water.
- Cindersap Forest river. Quieter, close to the Wizard's Tower, and handy if you want to grab hardwood in the Secret Woods while you're out.
- Mountain Lake. The best choice for a dedicated session. It's roomy and peaceful, easily reached via the mine cart system once you've repaired the tracks, and it shares water with other valuable winter fish like Perch and Pike.
On timing, the community Stardew Valley wiki's infobox lists the time as "Any," and that matches the documented behaviour: the Lingcod can be caught at any hour of the day during Winter (some guides list a 6 AM–7 PM window, but the wiki infobox and other sources give "Any").
One more note if you're used to real-world fishing: despite being a saltwater species in reality, the in-game Lingcod is a freshwater fish.
Build the rod for an 85-difficulty fight
Tackle is where most Lingcod attempts are won or lost.
| Tackle | Effect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Cork Bobber | Enlarges the fishing bar | Hard fish, including legendaries |
| Trap Bobber | Slows how fast the catch bar drains | Difficult fish that move a lot |
Equip the Cork Bobber first. A bigger green bar is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade against a fish this hard, and it forgives small reaction errors. If you keep losing the meter anyway, switch to the Trap Bobber, which slows the drain while the fish is outside your bar.
Both require an Iridium Rod, so budget for that upgrade before Winter starts rather than mid-season. And keep bait loaded at all times. An unbaited cast wastes part of a 28-day window you can't get back until next year.
Read the Mixed movement pattern
Lingcod behaviour is listed as "Mixed," meaning it alternates between movement patterns instead of committing to one. That's what makes it feel erratic.
- Stay centred in the bar and react to the change rather than chasing the fish toward an edge.
- Use short taps to hold position. Keep the bar hovering near the middle with quick, light presses, and only hold the button down once the fish commits to a sustained direction.
- Anticipate the drop. When the fish sits still for a beat, expect it to dart rather than drift, and be ready to release before it moves so the bar doesn't overshoot.
- Don't over-commit to one direction. The pattern flips, and a bar pinned to the top or bottom loses ground fast.
- Aim for a perfect catch where you can. Never letting the fish slip outside the bar upgrades quality if the fish was at least silver to begin with, and it multiplies fishing XP by 2.4 (Stardew Valley Wiki, Fish).
XP from a Lingcod scales with quality: 31 at normal, 34 at silver, 37 at gold and 43 at iridium (Stardew Valley Wiki, Lingcod). Perfect catches are how you push that number up without catching more fish.
Use the non-fishing shortcuts
If the minigame is beating you, the Lingcod has other sources.
- Krobus' shop on Wednesdays. Lingcod can appear in his rotating stock.
- The Traveling Cart. Check it every time it visits.
- A pet cat at maximum friendship. Another passive source.
- Magic Bait. The documented way to catch Lingcod regardless of season.
Two warnings. Shop-bought Lingcod will not count toward Demetrius' request to catch ten within six days, which needs rod catches. And save Magic Bait for out-of-season collection gaps rather than burning it during Winter, when the fish is already plentiful.
Decide what to do with the catch
A normal-quality Lingcod sells for 120g, or 240g smoked before you account for coal and machine time. Beyond the sale, there are better long-term plays.
- Hold one for a Fish Pond. Lingcod reproduce every 3 days, produce Roe worth 90g that ages into Aged Roe at 180g (or 252g with the +40% artisan bonus), and start throwing Bug Meat once the pond reaches nine fish.
- Keep extras for Willy's Winter mail quest. He writes on the 13th of Winter asking for a Lingcod, and you have sixteen days to deliver for 550g and a friendship heart.
- Keep more for Demetrius' six-day request if it comes up.
- Use spares for cooking and crafting. Maki Roll, Sashimi and Quality Fertilizer all take fish, and Lingcod also works for dyeing and tailoring.
- Check your Collections page if you're chasing the full fish list. No Community Center bundle requires Lingcod.
Selling every Lingcod before you start a pond is the mistake that stings most, because it costs you a full year of waiting.
Common mistakes that cost you the catch
- Fishing for Lingcod outside Winter and assuming the spawn is bugged. It's season-locked, and only Magic Bait bypasses that.
- Showing up with a bamboo pole and no tackle, then blaming RNG when the 85 difficulty drains the bar.
- Casting with an empty bait slot and wasting part of a season you only get once a year.
- Handing in shop-bought Lingcod for Demetrius' request and getting no credit.
- Forgetting that the Lingcod stops biting when Spring arrives. You have 28 days, so don't sleep on the timeline.
Fill out the rest of your Winter fishing log
Winter is the season when almost nothing grows outdoors. Only Powdermelon Seeds, Winter Seeds and Fiber Seeds will produce, and weeds plus most tilled soil are cleared at season start. That makes it the natural window for a serious fishing push, and the Lingcod is the trophy target inside it.
While your gear is already set up, work the Mountain Lake for Perch and Pike, and push fishing XP toward level 10 before Spring returns. Then convert the catch into a Fish Pond chain so Lingcod Roe becomes passive income instead of a one-off sale.
And for what's ahead, the Stardew Valley 1.7 Update is confirmed in development with no release date announced.
