Bream in Stardew Valley is a river fish you can catch in every season and in any weather, but only between 6:00pm and 2:00am. Cast into the river in Pelican Town or Cindersap Forest. With a difficulty of just 35 and smooth movement, it is one of the most forgiving night catches in the game. The base sell price is 45g, rising to 90g at iridium quality, which makes it a practical early target for the Night Fishing bundle and a reliable way to grind Fishing XP after dark.
Where and When Bream Bites
Bream is a window problem, not a bait problem. Almost every failed attempt comes from fishing the wrong water or casting outside the bite hours.
- Water: river only. The Pelican Town river is the default cast most players mean, and the Cindersap Forest river works too.
- Seasons: all four - Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.
- Weather: any weather. Rain, sun, and snow make no difference.
- Time: 6:00pm to 2:00am in-game time. It will not bite outside that window.
The fish itself is docile on the line. Its smooth behavior means it moves steadily in one direction before changing, so follow it gradually and anticipate the turns instead of jerking the bar around.

Bream Stats at a Glance
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Location | River (Pelican Town or Cindersap Forest) |
| Seasons | Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter |
| Weather | Any |
| Time | 6:00pm - 2:00am |
| Difficulty | 35 (Easy) |
| Behavior | Smooth |
| Size | 12-31 inches |
| Fishing XP | 14 / 17 / 20 / 26 (by quality) |
| Energy / Health | 13/5 (normal) up to 33/14 |
| Base sell price | 45g |
Sell Prices by Quality (and What Smoking Adds)
| Quality | Price | Multiplier | Smoked Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | 45g | 1.0x | 90g |
| Silver | 56g | 1.25x | 112g |
| Gold | 67g | 1.5x | 134g |
| Iridium | 90g | 2.0x | 180g |
The Fisher profession adds 25% over base, so a normal Bream sells for 56g instead of 45g. Taking Angler at Fishing level 10 raises that bonus to 50%. Smoking roughly doubles the value before you account for Coal and machine time, so it is only worth the fuel if you are already running a smoker for higher-value fish.
Fish Pond, Roe, and Aged Roe
Stock a Fish Pond with a Bream to start producing Roe. Roe sells for 52g, and Aged Roe sells for 104g, or 145g with the +40% Artisan bonus. At a population of three fish, the first capacity quest asks you to bring one of: 3 Acorn, 3 Maple Seed, 3 Pine Cone, or 10 Bug Meat to unlock capacity 4. Pond output depends on population and random daily rolls, so treat it as a bonus rather than steady daily profit.
What Bream Is Actually Good For
- Night Fishing bundle: Bream is a practical early night-caught fish for the Night Fishing bundle in the Community Center Fish Tank.
- Fishing XP: common and easy, which makes it a dependable after-dark grind.
- First-catch tutorial: Bream can be the fish the game selects for your tutorial catch.
- Sashimi: valid as an ingredient (any fish under 75g), though it is flagged as not profitable with the Fisher or Angler professions.
- Cat gift: a pet cat at max friendship can gift you a Bream.
Tackle and Rod Choices for Bream
Any rod works, from the Bamboo Pole to the Iridium Rod, because Bream is so docile on the line. The Bamboo Pole is your starting rod, and the Iridium Rod is purchased from Willy's shop at Fishing Level 6. Tackle requires an Iridium Rod, purchased from Willy's shop at Fishing Level 6, so until then you are fishing without tackle.
Once you have the Iridium Rod, the useful options are:
- Spinner or Dressed Spinner: faster bite rate, best for farming XP quickly.
- Cork Bobber or Barbed Hook: better Fishing Bar control for smooth and mixed behavior fish.
- Magic Bait: forces a catch regardless of time or season. Useful for completion cleanup, not for a first catch.
Mistakes That Cost You the Catch
- Fishing the ocean or the mountain lake instead of the river. Bream is river-only.
- Fishing in daylight. The 6:00pm to 2:00am window is strict.
- Treating it as a money fish. The base value is low, and it is not one of the five legendaries (Legend, Crimsonfish, Angler, Glacierfish, Mutant Carp).
- Shipping every Bream before checking bundle or recipe needs. Keep one back first.
Bream Is a Schedule Fish, Not a Trophy
The takeaway is simple: Bream rewards planning, not skill. Check the clock, walk to the river in Pelican Town or Cindersap Forest, and cast after 6:00pm. Keep the first one for the Night Fishing bundle, smoke or sell the rest, and use the easy bites to push your Fishing level toward better rods and tackle. It will never make you rich, but it is one of the friendliest night catches in Stardew Valley. For news beyond the riverbank, see our Stardew Valley 1.7 Update coverage.
