Mud is back. The most annoying NPC in Gothic history returns in the 2026 remake with the same single-minded purpose: to follow you everywhere, jabber incessantly, and provide absolutely zero gameplay benefit. He is a joke character, a relic from 2001 designed purely to test your patience. But here is the twist, before you club him into the dirt, you need to exhaust all 24 of his unique dialogue lines if you want the Mud Freak achievement. This guide covers every method to permanently silence him: scare him off, kill him yourself, or let the local wildlife do the dirty work.
Who Is Mud and Why Does He Follow You?
Mud is a digger from the Old Camp, found sitting outside his hut near Snaf the cook. The moment you speak to him, he latches onto your character and will not leave. Saying “Piss off” does nothing. He will trail you through the camp, into the wilderness, and even into combat areas. He provides no gameplay benefit, he does not fight, does not help with Old Camp acceptance, and does not contribute to any quests. In the original 2001 Gothic, Mud disappeared after Chapter 4 through story progression. Whether this behavior carries over to the remake is unknown, do not rely on it. For now, treat him as a permanent shadow until you take action.
He occasionally draws attention to scrap piles with random items while traveling, and enemies may attack him instead of you (he never fights back), but these are side effects, not features. His only real purpose is to be an annoyance, and a test of your patience.

The Four Methods to Get Rid of Mud
There are four reliable ways to remove Mud from your life. Each has its own tradeoffs, especially regarding the Mud Freak achievement. The table below gives a quick overview; detailed instructions follow.
| Method | Permanent? | Achievement-safe? | Loot acquired? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beat-and-spare (permanent scare) | Yes | Yes (requires prior dialogue exhaustion) | No (he lives) |
| Beating without killing (temporary scare) | Possibly after 2nd beating | Yes (but unreliable) | No |
| Direct kill | Yes | No (if done before exhausting dialogue) | Club, Water (1), Ore Nugget (5) |
| Lure into monster den | Yes (counts as kill) | No (same as direct kill) | Yes, if you loot corpse |
Method 1: Beat-and-Spare (Permanent Scare)
This is the primary recommended method. Deplete Mud’s HP fully, beat him until he falls to the ground, then choose the option to spare his life. He will get up, say a line, and permanently stop following you. This method is also required for the Mud Freak achievement (more on that below). No one in the Old Camp intervenes, so you can do it in broad daylight with no consequences.
Method 2: Beating Without Killing (Temporary Scare)
If you beat Mud without fully depleting his HP, he will run off but return after a short time. Extensive community testing (primarily from the original Gothic fan forums) suggests that a second beating, again without killing, may scare him off for good. However, this is based on anecdotal reports from preview builds and is not guaranteed across all playthroughs. If you want a surefire solution, go with the full beat-and-spare instead.
Method 3: Direct Kill
Deplete Mud’s HP and deliver the final blow. Nobody in the Old Camp will react, it is safe to kill him in plain sight. Killing Mud is permanent; dead NPCs do not respawn in Gothic 1 Remake. He drops a Club (one-handed mace), 1 Water, and 5 Ore Nuggets, modest loot worth grabbing early in the game. However, killing him before exhausting his dialogue locks you out of the achievement permanently. If you do not care about trophies, this is the quickest method.
Method 4: Lure Into a Monster Den
Lead Mud to scavengers, wolves, or blood flies and let them do the work. He will not fight back, and enemies will target him instead of you. This hands-off elimination is particularly satisfying if you want to watch nature take its course. It counts as a kill, so the same achievement warning applies.
The Mud Freak Achievement, Why You Must Exhaust Dialogue First
The Mud Freak achievement/trophy requires exhausting all 24 of Mud’s unique dialogue lines. To unlock it, you must beat him up and spare his life (not kill him). The final dialogue line triggers only when you spare him after depleting his HP. If you kill Mud before exhausting all 24 lines, the achievement becomes permanently locked, dead NPCs do not respawn.
Exhausting his dialogue does not require completing any other quests. It is purely a matter of talking to him repeatedly until he starts repeating himself. Some lines may require time or specific locations to trigger, so be thorough.
How to Confirm Dialogue Exhaustion
Keep talking to Mud until you hear a line you have heard before. Once he is fully repeating himself, typically after cycling through all 24 unique lines, you are ready to beat him and spare him. If you are unsure, speak to him after a few in-game hours to see if he offers anything new. When no fresh dialogue appears, you are done.

Loot, Chest, and Other Details
Mud’s drops upon death are modest but useful early on: a Club, 1 Water, and 5 Ore Nuggets. Inside his hut in the Old Camp, you will find his personal chest containing 3 Ore Nuggets, 1 piece of bread, and some junk. He does not react if you loot it, so feel free to take everything.
Bugs & Quirks:
- Mud can occasionally get stuck while following you through tight spaces or terrain. If this happens, he eventually resets back to his house in the Old Camp.
- Some players have reported that after approximately three hours of following, Mud can be asked to be quiet temporarily. This is an anecdotal claim (based on community reports from preview builds) and is not consistent across all playthroughs. Do not rely on it as a guaranteed mechanic.
The Only Choice That Matters
Mud has been a source of frustration and humor for Gothic players for 25 years. In the remake, his purpose has not changed, and neither has the player’s desire to silence him. Whether you choose the beat-and-spare method for the achievement, a direct kill for quick loot, or a monster lure for pure entertainment, the decision is yours.
For completionists, exhaust his dialogue first, then beat him and spare him. For speedrunners or players who just want him gone, kill him without hesitation. And for those who enjoy a bit of old-school chaos, lead him into a blood fly nest and watch the show.
In twenty-five years, Mud’s role has remained the same: to test your patience. The remake gives you more tools than ever to win that test. Use them wisely.
