How to Get High Quality Pal Oil in Palworld: The Ultimate Progression-Based Guide (2025)

Why High Quality Pal Oil Matters, Uses and Crafting

You cannot escape this resource once you hit the mid-game. The first major sink is the Musket (25 ingots, 5 oil, 3 wooden boards), followed by the Makeshift Handgun (35 ingots, 10 oil, 30 fiber). Even the Weapons Assembly Line requires 10 oil alongside 100 ingots, 20 wood boards, and 20 nails. Firepower is only the beginning.

Polymer unlocks at Player Level 33 for 2 Technology Points and requires 2 High Quality Pal Oil and 1 Sulfur per batch. From there, Polymer feeds into Circuit Boards, Refrigerators, Electric Furnaces, and higher-tier guns. Every step of late-game progression demands more oil, and planning ahead saves hours of backtracking.

The key fact to understand: oil is not farmable in bulk early on. You will scrape by with manual kills until you unlock the Ranch and can shift to passive production. Prioritize methods that scale with your level, and you will avoid the oil drought that stalls many playthroughs.

Passive Farming, The Dumud Ranch Method (Best for Late Game)

The single most efficient long-term method arrived in the v0.2.0.6 patch and revolves around one Pal: Dumud. When assigned to a Ranch (a structure unlocked at Player Level 5), Dumud passively produces High Quality Pal Oil at a rate of roughly 2 flasks every 5 minutes. No combat, no travel, no resource cost, just steady automation.

Where to Find Dumud

Dumud spawns in desert regions south of Mount Obsidian and west of Mount Flopie. There is also an Alpha Dumud (Level 14) on Ice Wind Island that can be captured for a strong starting specimen. Since the Ranch recipe is available so early, you can begin passive oil collection well before you actually need it for Polymer.

What Palworld’s Ranch Can and Cannot Do

A common misconception is that Flambelle or Woolipop can also produce oil at the Ranch. This is not supported by the game’s mechanics. Flambelle drops Flame Organ, and Woolipop drops Cotton Candy, neither yields High Quality Pal Oil. Only Dumud is confirmed for passive oil farming, so skip the experiments and go straight for the desert dweller.

For maximum output, build multiple Ranches and assign several Dumud. Even two Dumud running in parallel will eliminate your oil worries by the time you reach Level 33. It is the ultimate set-and-forget solution.

Active Farming, Best Pals to Fight or Capture (By Stage)

Passive farming is ideal once established, but you still need oil before Dumud scales up. Active hunting is your primary method in early and mid game, and a useful supplement later.

Early Game (Levels 1, 20): Woolipop

The most reliable early source is Woolipop, found in abundance near the Ravine Entrance waypoint west of the Small Settlement. They are low level, respawn quickly, and drop oil consistently. With a weak team and basic weapons, you can farm a stack of oil in under an hour.

Mid Game (Levels 20, 35): Relaxaurus

Once you have a few levels and better Pals, head to the Ascetic Falls fast travel point. Relaxaurus spawns nearby and drops High Quality Pal Oil at a high rate. They also grant decent experience, making repeated farming worthwhile. This is the best active farm until you get passive Dumud production running.

Late Game (Levels 35+): Mammorest, Quivern, Jormuntide Ignis

When you need oil in bulk for Polymer or endgame weapons, target higher-level Pals. Mammorest, Quivern, and Jormuntide Ignis each drop more oil per kill than their lower-level counterparts. They require a stronger team and better weapons, but the payoff is worth it.

Alternative Methods, Butchering and Merchant Purchase

The Double-Dip Strategy

The Meat Cleaver, unlocked at Level 12, turns every capture into a potential two-drop. Capture a Pal, you get oil from the capture. Then open your inventory, select the Meat Cleaver, and use it on the Pal in your party or base. You receive a second oil drop (and other materials) while the Pal is lost. This works on any oil-dropping Pal and is especially powerful early game when you are catching every Woolipop you see.

For this double-dip strategy, focus on these 11 Pals: Woolipop, Dumud, Grintale, Digtoise, Flambelle, Elphidran, Relaxaurus, Mammorest, Quivern, Jormuntide Ignis, and Xenogard. Note that Xenogard is an endgame encounter, so you will not need to farm it regularly.

Merchant Purchase

Wandering Merchants sell High Quality Pal Oil for 300 Gold each. Confirmed locations include Duneshelter and Fisherman’s Point. Buying oil is a stopgap, prices are too high for bulk orders, but it can save you in a pinch if you are one flask short of crafting a key item. Save your gold for more pressing needs and treat merchants as an emergency option.

From Grind to Automation, Your Progression Roadmap

The beauty of Palworld’s oil economy after the v0.2.0.6 patch is that you never need to grind if you plan ahead. Here is the ideal path:

  • Early game (Levels 1, 20): Hunt Woolipop near Ravine Entrance. Capture every one you see, then butcher them with the Meat Cleaver. Stockpile enough oil for your first firearms and the Weapons Assembly Line.
  • Mid game (Levels 20, 35): Switch to Relaxaurus near Ascetic Falls for higher drop rates. Meanwhile, build your first Ranch and capture a Dumud (or two) from the desert. Let passive production begin. You will still need to hunt actively until the Ranch output covers your needs.
  • Late game (Levels 35+): Expand your Dumud Ranch to three or four assigned Pals. At this stage, passive farming alone should supply all your Polymer and gun crafting. Supplement with occasional Mammorest or Quivern kills if you need a sudden burst. You should never have to go on a dedicated oil hunt again.

The April 2024 patch made the old grind obsolete. With a stable of Dumud producing oil around the clock, you can focus on exploration, base building, and endgame challenges. What are your go-to farming setups? Share your strategies in the comments below!
