God of War Laufey: Why Faye and a Jelly Cube Are the Franchise's Boldest Gamble

The most enduring image in modern God of War is not a battle. It is a funeral. Kratos carries his wife's body to a pyre while Atreus watches, and the flames take Faye before players ever hear her speak. Since 2018, that scene has been the franchise's quiet foundation: the dead mother whose absence shaped a father and a son.

In God of War Laufey, she wakes up. And the camera stays with her.

Announced at the June 2, 2026 State of Play with roughly 20 minutes of gameplay, God of War Laufey is the first mainline entry in the series led by someone other than Kratos (per coverage of the reveal), the game in which Faye takes the lead while Kratos remains in the world of the living. Faye, formally Laufey the Just, takes the lead in a story set during the events of God of War (2018) and Ragnarok (2022). She is joined by a sentient "cosmic cube" named Phranque and sentient ribbons called Rue, and she arrives on PS5 on February 16, 2027, with pre-orders already open.

It is a remarkable pivot, and it raises a question the franchise has never had to answer: can a God of War game work without Kratos at the center?

Faye Steps Out of the Shadow of the Pyre

For newcomers, the essentials first. Faye is Kratos' wife and a Jötunn, a giant, known in the Nine Realms as Laufey the Just. In the games, she is the reason Kratos and Atreus traveled at all: her dying wish sent them across the realms with her ashes.

The reveal footage opens exactly where God of War (2018) did, with Kratos placing Faye's body on a burning pyre alongside Atreus. Then Faye wakes somewhere else, aware of what has transpired.

The Laufey God of War Actress Returns

Deborah Ann Woll reprises the role she played in Ragnarok, a continuity point worth flagging for anyone who followed the Norse saga closely.

The story unfolds from inside Faye's perspective, running alongside the journey players already know. Those interested in how the studio is positioning the shift can read more in Beyond Kratos: Inside Sony Santa Monica's plans for a wider universe.

The Everywhen: Gods From Every Mythology in One Afterlife

The setting is the Everywhen. The PlayStation Blog describes it as the afterlife of the gods, a realm where deities from across mythologies vie for power. Phranque calls it "the afterlife of the Gods" in the reveal, the Everywhen by its proper name.

This is the series' clearest move beyond Norse mythology. God of War has flirted with other pantheons before, but the Everywhen makes the crossover structural rather than a tease. Notably, the reveal did not say which pantheons appear, so any list circulating online is speculation. The only hint of another tradition in official material is a reference to Begtse's soldiers in the Collector Box statue description. Treat that as a cautious hint rather than a confirmed mythology. For context on where the franchise has been, God of War's Greek Era Is Back examines what Sons of Sparta and Laufey mean for the series at large.

Phranque, Rue, and the Weirdest Supporting Cast in God of War History

Phranque is the headline oddity: a sentient cosmic cube who appears in the reveal and explains the setting to Faye, and by extension to the player. Rue is stranger still in practical terms, a set of sentient ribbons attached to Faye's blade that keep it from being lost to enemies.

Why this matters is tonal. The series has not had companions like these before. Phranque and Rue signal how far the Everywhen sits from the Nine Realms, and how much Santa Monica Studio is willing to change to make Faye's story feel distinct.

The cube deserves curiosity rather than a smirk. In a franchise built on grim vengeance and quiet grief, an entity that talks back is a genuine formal experiment.

How Faye Fights: Blade, Bow, and Air Combos

Combat is classic God of War, tuned for Faye. Her projectable and retrievable blade, anchored by Rue, forms the core of her kit, and it appeared in the June reveal. The Serpent Bow came later, with the September 28 pre-order announcement, and Polygon reports it enables air-combo play.

The June preview closes with Faye escaping captivity via magic, landing in a full-scale battle, and then fighting a brutal one-on-one boss-style encounter. Taken together, the weapons point to an encounter design built around mobility and retrieval rather than Kratos' weight. Faye throws her blade and pulls it back; she takes to the air with a bow. Where Kratos planted his feet, Faye moves.

Release Date, Editions, and the Collector Box Catch

God of War Laufey launches February 16, 2027, on PS5, and only PS5 per all official communications. Pre-orders opened September 29, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. local time, announced on the PlayStation Blog the day before, with a pre-order bonus and a Digital Deluxe Edition detailed alongside.

The Collector Box, detailed October 13, 2026, includes an eight-inch light-up Faye statue depicting Faye, Phranque and Rue fighting Begtse's soldiers. The catch: the game is sold separately. No traditional game-included Collector's Edition was announced. A full breakdown of what each version contains is available in this God of War Laufey Editions Guide.

The Discourse Around the Pivot

According to coverage of the reaction, the reveal drew a mixed-to-hostile fan response, with public responses from Santa Monica Studio, Cory Barlog and director Ariel Lawrence; IGN reported that original God of War creator David Jaffe defended Lawrence from harassment after his own critical remarks. The discourse has been loud, and readers should weigh it against what the game actually shows.

A Story Burned Before It Was Told

Return to the pyre. The series killed Faye off-screen before it ever began, then spent two games letting her absence do the work. Now the story is being told from inside the afterlife, with a giant who was never the protagonist and a cube who never stops talking.

February 16, 2027 is the next checkpoint. The Everywhen is the franchise's biggest open question: which gods show up, what Begtse's soldiers are guarding, and whether a talking cube can share a God of War. The pyre has been relit, and this time Faye is the one walking out of it.
