God of War's Greek Era Is Back: What Sons of Sparta and Laufey Mean for the Franchise

For nearly a decade, God of War has meant Norse mythology. Snow, runes, a quieter Kratos, and a boy learning to hunt. The Greek era - all marble, rage and severed heads - felt like a closed chapter, preserved only in remasters and the memories of players who grew up with it.

Then 2026 delivered two God of War releases in a single month. God of War: Sons of Sparta arrived on February 12, and God of War Laufey follows on February 16. Two titles, two mythologies, and a franchise that appears to have stopped treating its Greek past as something to move on from.

This piece is about direction rather than review. It examines what these two projects say about where God of War is heading.

The Greek Era, Reopened

God of War began on the PlayStation 2 on March 22, 2005, developed by Santa Monica Studio and directed by David Jaffe. It was a bloody, cinematic take on Greek mythology in which Kratos, a Spartan warrior bound to Ares, carved his way through the pantheon. God of War III followed on PlayStation 3 in March 2010, delivering the series' most spectacular rendition of that mythological sandbox.

Then came the pivot. Cory Barlog's 2018 soft reboot moved the series to Norse mythology with an older Kratos and his son Atreus. It launched on PS4 on April 20, 2018, and later arrived on Windows on January 14, 2022. The change was so complete that "God of War" became shorthand for Norse storytelling in blockbuster games.

The framing worth holding onto is this: the Greek era was never abandoned, only set aside. The first seven games plus the 2026 Greek-era title constitute that lineage. That the franchise has returned to it now, with a new studio and a new genre, is the more interesting story.

Sons of Sparta Is a Greek-Era Spin-off, Not a Numbered Sequel

God of War: Sons of Sparta is a Metroidvania developed by Mega Cat Studios in collaboration with Santa Monica Studio, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and released on February 12, 2026 for PlayStation 5. It includes single-player and multiplayer modes.

It is worth placing it honestly in the lineup. Sons of Sparta is a Greek-era entry in genre and developer, but it is not a numbered mainline sequel. It is the tenth game in the franchise, a 2026 Metroidvania developed by Mega Cat Studios with Santa Monica Studio rather than a numbered mainline entry.

The credits, however, suggest something more substantial than a quick side project. The directors are Zack Manko and Nate Flynn. The writing team includes Matt Sophos, Richard Zangrande Gaubert, and Orion Walker. And Bear McCreary, who composed the 2018 score, is credited here too, which points to a deliberate continuity of musical identity across eras (Sons of Sparta credits).

Laufey Moves the Norse Thread Forward

On the other side of the ledger, God of War Laufey launches on February 16 with Faye, also known as Laufey, as its protagonist. Pre-orders opened on September 29, with edition details laid out in a September 2026 PlayStation.Blog post, and a first look at the game was published by Grace Orlady, Communications Director at Santa Monica Studio. Readers weighing up which version to buy can consult this God of War Laufey Editions Guide for a breakdown of the standard, Digital Deluxe, and upgrade options.

Why the Greek Gods Still Matter to the Series

Kratos, created by David Jaffe, remains the throughline of the entire franchise. His 2018-era design draws on Fárbauti of Norse mythology, but his origin is unmistakably Greek - and that is precisely the territory Sons of Sparta returns to. Mega Cat Studios discussed the origins of Kratos and of the studio's own name in a PlayStation.Blog post, tying the spin-off's identity directly to the character's Greek roots.

The strategy emerging from these two releases looks less like a replacement and more like a parallel track. A Greek-era Metroidvania spin-off and a Norse-era Faye story are running side by side rather than one displacing the other. For a series that spent eight years building a new identity, that is a notable shift in posture.

What's Confirmed and What Isn't

Clarity matters when two releases land in the same month, so here is the state of play.

Confirmed: Sons of Sparta's release date, developer, publisher, platform, and credits; Laufey's February 16 date, pre-orders, and bonuses; and the historical dates for the 2005, 2010, and 2018 games.

One clarification for readers who may have seen older items resurface: the 2018 game's PC port, released January 14, 2022, is archival material, not news.

Two Tracks, One Franchise

2026 is the year God of War stopped treating its Greek era as a closed chapter. Rather than predicting what comes next, the more useful observation is structural: the franchise now appears comfortable running two mythologies at once - a Metroidvania spin-off revisiting Kratos' mythological roots, and a Faye-led Norse story carrying the thread established in 2018.

How the series balances those two identities, and whether audiences follow it down both paths, is the question worth watching. God of War Laufey launches February 16, with pre-orders already open and bonuses including in-game resources and exclusive cosmetics, while Sons of Sparta shows the Greek era remains part of the franchise.

For a series built on a Spartan's war against Olympus, it seems fitting that the past refuses to stay buried.
