The Best Survival Horror Games to Play This Halloween: 10 Picks Led by Resident Evil Requiem

Start with Resident Evil Requiem. Capcom's ninth mainline entry launched on 27 February 2026 and had sold 8.51 million copies worldwide by 30 September 2026, per Capcom's own figures. Then move to Silent Hill: Townfall for slow first-person dread, and fill the rest of the evening with recent releases: Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival (8 October 2026), Halloween: The Game (8 September 2026) and Tenebris Somnia. If friends are joining, swap in a co-op pick such as Reanimal or Blue Ridge Hunting instead.

This list prioritises games released in 2026 rather than the usual classics, because 2026 has been an unusually strong year for survival horror games. The genre's momentum is not new, but the volume of new releases and remasters across the past twelve months makes this Halloween a good moment to play something current.

The 10 picks at a glance

  1. Resident Evil Requiem, the year's biggest horror release and the strongest anchor for a long night, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Switch 2, solo.
  2. Silent Hill: Townfall, the other headline 2026 title, released 24 September 2026 on PlayStation 5 and PC, solo.
  3. Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival, an original Hellraiser story rather than a film adaptation, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Switch 2, solo.
  4. Halloween: The Game, IllFonic's asymmetrical multiplayer retelling of John Carpenter's 1978 film from a different perspective, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, multiplayer.
  5. Tenebris Somnia, 2D, 90s-style pixel survival horror in the Resident Evil and Silent Hill mold, PC, solo.
  6. Poppy Playtime: Chapter 5, only for players already through the first four chapters, PC and consoles, solo.
  7. Crisol: Theater of Idols, Spanish-set survival horror where your health bar doubles as ammo, PC, solo.
  8. Reanimal, atmosphere and environmental storytelling from the Little Nightmares studio, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Switch 2, solo or co-op.
  9. Blue Ridge Hunting, Appalachian cryptid hunting built for groups, co-op.
  10. Pit of Goblin, an online co-op horror game joining Xbox Game Pass on 3 November 2026.

The sections below expand on each pick in turn.

Before you buy

  • A current platform. Most picks run on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Requiem, Reanimal and Hellraiser: Revival also list Nintendo Switch 2, but support varies by title.
  • Time. Budget a weekend or more for the big-budget picks; TheGamer puts Resident Evil Requiem at roughly 10–12 hours. The indie selections are much shorter.
  • A headset. Several of these lean on audio cues more than jump scares.
  • A sale check. Several recent horror releases have been discounted across digital stores, so compare before you pay full price.
  • A decision on solo versus co-op. The two halves of this list barely overlap, so pick your mode before you buy.

How to start tonight

  1. Confirm your platform. Open your console's store or Steam and search the title by name. If it does not appear, the game is not available on your system yet.
  2. Confirm solo or co-op. Check the store listing's player-count field before purchase. Co-op picks are marked as such in the list above.
  3. Install and update. Download the game and let any day-one patch finish before you start; horror titles often ship audio fixes in the first update.
  4. Set your audio. Put on headphones and raise the volume before the opening chapter. Several of these games place cues in the rear channels.
  5. Play the opening hour first. If you only have one free night, start with Requiem, since the opening Grace sections deliver the strongest scares.

1. Resident Evil Requiem is your anchor

Requiem is built on RE Engine and is the first Resident Evil designed for ninth-generation consoles. It splits the campaign between Grace Ashcroft, whose sections are scarcity-driven and fear-focused, and Leon S. Kennedy, whose sections are action-forward. It is Leon's first major appearance since Resident Evil 6 in 2012.

The commercial case is settled. Capcom reported 8.51 million copies sold by 30 September 2026, with the franchise past 218 million cumulative units, and the game took an Award for Excellence in the Games of the Year division at the Japan Game Awards 2026. If you want the full story of how it got there, Resident Evil Requiem Shatters Franchise Records covers the early sales surge, and Resident Evil Requiem Shatters Series Records breaks down its performance on Steam.

A word of balance: the later Leon sections and the bomb-component search dilute Grace's role somewhat, and the police-station return rewards series knowledge. If you want to see how Capcom balances those two halves, Resident Evil Requiem explains the design tension.

Two practical notes before you start. If you want to find everything, our Resident Evil Requiem collectibles guide covers interactive maps and the missable Mr. Raccoon collectibles. And if you have already finished the campaign, Resident Evil Requiem's Surprise Demo is worth a look for the free trial. Modders can extend the run further with our Resident Evil Requiem Mod Guide.

How long is Resident Evil Requiem?

TheGamer estimates Resident Evil Requiem at roughly 10–12 hours. Treat it as a multi-night game rather than a single evening, and play it first if you only have one free night.

2. Silent Hill: Townfall for first-person horror

Townfall is the other headline 2026 pick and a first-person take on Silent Hill. Konami and 2000 AD published a tie-in comic, "The Dock House," announced on 10 September 2026. It is a prequel set in St. Amelia, written by lead writer and director Jon McKellan with artist David Roach. Read it first if you want the setting's backstory before you boot the game.

Treat Konami's release plans as an ambition, not a schedule. Producer Motoi Okamoto has spoken about roughly one Silent Hill game a year and "second and third waves" of projects, but no fixed calendar should be assumed. It is out now on PlayStation 5 and PC, so check your storefront for availability and price.

3. Recent new survival horror games

  • Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival launched on 8 October 2026 with an original story set in the Hellraiser universe rather than a film adaptation. Switch 2 was added as a day-one platform in August 2026.
  • Halloween: The Game from IllFonic revisits John Carpenter's 1978 film from a different perspective. Search your storefront for the current edition and platform before buying.
  • Tenebris Somnia, from Saibot Studios and published by New Blood Interactive, is a 2D, 90s-style pixel survival horror in the Resident Evil and Silent Hill mold.
  • Poppy Playtime: Chapter 5 arrived on 18 February 2026. It is only worth it if you have already played the earlier chapters.

4. Add an indie pick or two

Recent months have been a notably dense period for indie horror on Steam, following a busy September around Tokyo Game Show. The Guardian's roundup of eight new indie horror games is a good shortlist if you want something outside the big publishers.

Crisol: Theater of Idols is the standout. It is a survival horror with a Spanish setting and a gimmick where your health bar doubles as ammo. Developer Vermila Studios laid off staff in July and said it will likely shut down, so buy it if you want to support the team.

Reanimal, from Little Nightmares developer Tarsier, is the pick if you want atmosphere and environmental storytelling over combat. Its puzzles lean on trial and error.

5. Co-op picks

Reanimal doubles as a spooky alternative to Split Fiction and has been discounted across digital stores, excluding Switch 2. Player count and crossplay support are not confirmed here, so check the store listing before you invite anyone.

Blue Ridge Hunting is an Appalachian cryptid co-op title for groups that want panic and laughter rather than dread.

Pit of Goblin joins Xbox Game Pass on 3 November 2026, a cheap option if you are happy to wait a few days past Halloween. R.E.P.O. and Pacify remain reliable group-scares picks if your friends already own them.

6. Revisit the classics if you've played the new stuff

The survival horror renaissance is not new either: 2025's Halloween lineups already called it a long-hoped-for revival, with eight new horror games in October 2025 alone.

2026 is Resident Evil's 30th anniversary year, which makes a run back through the older mainline entries a fitting companion to Requiem.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a sequel chapter out of order. Poppy Playtime: Chapter 5 assumes you have played the previous four.
  • Assuming every pick is on every platform. Switch 2 support varies by title, and Reanimal's discount excluded it.
  • Waiting for a sale that already happened. Check current prices rather than assuming a past discount is still live.
  • Picking a co-op game for a solo night. Reanimal, Blue Ridge Hunting and Pacify are built around other people.
  • Assuming Townfall is on every platform. It released on 24 September 2026 for PlayStation 5 and PC only.

Build a three-night horror schedule

  1. Night one: Requiem. It is the longest commitment and the strongest anchor.
  2. Night two: Townfall if it is available on your platform, otherwise Hellraiser: Revival. Pair either with Halloween: The Game depending on which film you know better.
  3. Night three: an indie double bill. Draw from The Guardian's indie shortlist or pair Tenebris Somnia with Crisol: Theater of Idols.
  4. If friends join: swap night three for Reanimal, and keep Pit of Goblin in reserve for 3 November on Game Pass.

One piece of context worth knowing before you spend: Supermassive Games, the Until Dawn and Directive 8020 studio, laid off more than 70 staff in October 2026. The horror boom is real, but it sits alongside industry contraction, so it is worth knowing which studios your purchase supports.
