The Quick Answer
Rockstar has named six regions of Leonida: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Rockstar North art director Aaron Garbut is reported to have put the state at roughly twice the size of GTA V's map. What Rockstar has not published is a full map or an official figure in square kilometres, so everything beyond the six names and that one comparison is either leak-derived or fan reconstruction.
Those names came through Game Informer's cover story on issue 382, reported to run 14 pages and include 12 new screenshots (digital edition, September 29, 2026). Below, you'll find the three tiers of map information separated so you can plan your first twenty hours without building a route around place names that might not survive launch day.
What You Need Before You Start
- Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Launch is November 19, 2026. No PC version has been announced at the time of writing.
- The Game Informer issue 382 cover story (digital edition, late September 2026) or a detailed write-up of it. This is the de facto source for the six region names and the size comparison.
- A working sense of evidence tiers. Official Rockstar material, reported-from-Game-Informer material, and leak or fan-map material are three different things, and most online confusion comes from mixing them.
- No pre-order required. The six region names are public information.
- Optional: the "Goodtime State - Vice City Collection" pre-order bundle, reported to include a Leonida map, if you want a physical reference.
If you're still sorting out where and when to buy, our breakdown of GTA 6 Pre-Orders Go Live June 25 covers the timing side.
The Six Confirmed Regions and What Each One Is For
Rockstar's official game page frames the story as a criminal conspiracy "stretching across the state of Leonida," with Vice City as the centerpiece. The six named regions map onto real Florida inspirations. Rockstar has not detailed any region-specific mechanics, economies or story gating, so the notes below are either attributed reporting or expectations drawn from each region's real-world analogue.
- Vice City. The anchor of the story and Rockstar's fictional Miami. A return to the setting of 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Vice City is the anchor of the story, per Rockstar's game page.
- The Leonida Keys. The southern island chain, modelled on the Florida Keys. Based on that inspiration, expect a boat-heavy area rather than your opening playground.
- Grassrivers. The Everglades analogue: swamp and wetland terrain. Based on the real Everglades, a road-only playstyle is likely to be the least rewarding here.
- Port Gellhorn. One of the six named regions; Rockstar has not described its character or mechanics.
- Ambrosia. One of the six named regions; Rockstar has not described its character or mechanics.
- Mount Kalaga National Park. One of the six named regions; Rockstar has not described its terrain.
One important framing note: treat "six regions" as six named regions, not a confirmed total. Coverage also describes Leonida as spanning at least six counties, and regions and counties are not the same thing. More may exist in the shipped game.
Setting Expectations on Size
The only size figure worth repeating is "roughly twice the size of GTA V's map," attributed to Aaron Garbut via Game Informer. Multiple independent write-ups of the same cover story corroborate it.
Ignore the "three times Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area" multiplier that circulates on aggregator sites. It has no traceable Rockstar quote and is not repeated by the outlets that covered the cover story directly. Rockstar has published no official square-kilometre figure either. Anyone quoting one is estimating or repeating a fan calculation.
Practically speaking, twice GTA V means you cannot clear a region in a single session. Plan to live in one region for a stretch rather than touring the whole state in your first week. And do not treat any map as final. The shipped map is the only authoritative one.
Official Information Versus the August 2026 Leak
Sort every map claim you encounter into one of three buckets before you act on it.
Official tier. Rockstar's game page and Newswire confirm the setting (Vice City, state of Leonida), the characters and the November 19, 2026 date. They do not include a full map.
Reported tier. The Game Informer cover story, which named the six regions and carried the size comparison alongside new screenshots.
Leak tier. The "Cyberleek" leak, with clips and cropped map images circulating from around mid-August 2026, showing place names such as Dalton Island, Tequesta Retreat, Gloriana Key and Catalan Key.
Those four place names are unverified and unconfirmed by Rockstar. Do not build a route, a base location or a purchase decision around them. Motive claims around the leak, whether a digital-only protest or a crypto bet, are unverified speculation from individual outlets and tell you nothing about the map itself.
Using Fan Maps as a Hypothesis, Not a Source
Fan mapping projects have been rebuilding Leonida from trailers, screenshots and leaks since 2022, and sites like GTABase, Leonida Explorer and GTASixMap now claim thousands of mapped locations with wildly varying evidence standards. Here is the method worth following:
- Check the evidence labels before trusting a pin. The good projects mark whether a location is trailer-confirmed, screenshot-derived or leak-derived.
- Cross-reference anything that appears on only one interactive map. Single-source pins are the ones that evaporate at launch.
- Use fan maps for orientation, meaning the rough relative positions of the six regions, not for exact distances, road layouts or interior locations.
- Expect a full reset when the game ships, when the real thing replaces the reconstructions.
If a pin turns out to be wrong, the recovery is simple: fall back to the region-level names, which are the only map information Rockstar has actually put its name to.
Reading the Collector's Edition Map for What It Actually Is
The "Goodtime State - Vice City Collection" pre-order bundle is reported to include a full Leonida map. Several outlets framed this as Rockstar "leaking" map locations, but that is editorial interpretation, not a Rockstar statement. Treat the map as merchandise until launch confirms otherwise.
If you're buying the bundle for the map alone, check the contents list before you pay. It is listed at $399.99 on the Rockstar Store (reported in the UK at £349) and, per at least one outlet, does not include the game itself. If that turns out to be the case after purchase, your recourse is the retailer's refund or cancellation window rather than Rockstar, so confirm the contents at checkout. A decorative map will show region shapes and major labels, which lines up with what Game Informer already told us. Don't expect it to settle any leak-tier place names.
What the Living-World Reporting Does and Doesn't Tell You
The same cover story that named the regions also covered dynamic weather including hurricanes and more than 170 animal species. That is reported feature detail, not confirmed map behaviour, and it does not by itself justify a route plan.
- If hurricanes behave as reported, expect coastal and Keys travel to be less predictable than inland travel. That is an inference from the weather feature, not a confirmed mechanic, so treat any inland-first strategy as a hedge rather than a rule.
- The wildlife count suggests Mount Kalaga National Park and Grassrivers will reward on-foot exploration, but how species are distributed across regions has not been detailed.
- Weather that "won't always be sunny" is a reason to stay flexible with vehicles early, not a confirmed reason to avoid buying one.
It's also worth remembering that Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 Is a Single-Player Experience at launch, so your map planning is entirely about the campaign rather than shared-world considerations.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating "full map reveal" headlines as a published map. They are shorthand for the six region names plus screenshots. Rockstar has released neither a complete map nor a km² figure.
- Repeating the three-times-RDR2 figure as fact. It appears on a single aggregator page with no traceable Rockstar quote. Use only the twice-GTA-V comparison, attributed to Garbut.
- Planning around Dalton Island, Tequesta Retreat, Gloriana Key or Catalan Key. These come from the August 2026 Cyberleek leak and are unconfirmed.
- Reading a fan map's thousands of pins as thousands of confirmed locations. Evidence standards vary wildly between sites; check the labels.
- Assuming six regions is the total. Coverage describes six named regions and at least six counties. More may exist in the shipped game.
- Buying the collector's bundle expecting the game inside. See the section above before you pay.
Locking In Your Launch-Day Region Plan
- Pick your opening region now. Pick whichever of the six named regions appeals most; Rockstar has not detailed how each region plays. If it goes wrong, if story progress turns out to be gated elsewhere, you lose travel time, not progress, so keep the save flexible.
- Bookmark one interactive map with visible evidence labels and ignore the rest. If it goes wrong, if a pin proves inaccurate, drop back to region-level orientation and wait for the shipped map.
- Re-check Rockstar's Newswire in the days before launch for any official map or size statement that supersedes the Game Informer reporting. If it goes wrong, if no statement arrives, nothing changes; the six names remain the only confirmed map detail.
- Verify the six region names against your own map screen on launch day and discard every leak-tier place name that doesn't appear. If it goes wrong, if a name is missing, the in-game map wins, and the fan projects reset around it.
- Treat the shipped map as the final word. No leak, fan project or collector's edition poster changes what your map screen shows.
