Where to Find Snaf and Start the Quest
Snaf, the Old Camp cook, stands near his cooking pot along the north wall of the camp. To reach him, enter Old Camp via the north gate, the one behind the stone bridge that leads out of the colony’s starting area. Once inside, turn left and look for the pot with the fire. Snaf will be right there, ready to hand out his first assignment.
He asks for two simple ingredients: 3 bugmeats (harvested from meatbugs) and 5 hellcaps (also called hell mushrooms). The quest is available in Chapter 1 and requires no combat or special skills. It is the perfect introduction to Gothic’s exploration-first design, where you solve problems by reading the world rather than following a dotted line.
A quick note: This quest does not count toward the main “Casting Shadows” admission quest for the Old Camp. It is purely a side objective. But completing it early makes your survival much easier.
Finding 3 Bugmeats, Walk, Don’t Fight
Meatbugs are the easiest creatures in the colony to deal with. You do not need to draw a weapon or learn a combat skill. Simply walk over them and they die from a single stomp. Each one drops a bugmeat.
The primary location for three guaranteed meatbugs is right inside the camp. From Snaf, follow the path to the left, circling the Old Camp castle clockwise past the fighting arena. The meatbugs crawl across the road. Step on them as you go. You will have your three bugmeats in under a minute.
If you accidentally kill more than three (or need extras for crafting later), alternative locations exist:
- South of the Exchange Place, inside a small cave. Two meatbugs spawn there.
- West of Old Camp behind Cavalorn’s hut. Two more meatbugs can be found.
- On the road leading to New Camp. One meatbug crawls along this path.
Remember: meatbugs are harmless. You can collect bugmeats at any time without worrying about combat.
Harvesting 5 Hellcaps, Multiple Hotspots
Hellcaps are the trickier ingredient because they blend into the environment. They look like glowing red mushrooms with a distinctive cap. You need five to complete Snaf’s recipe.
The best early spot for hellcaps lies just north of Old Camp. Exit the camp through the north gate, cross the stone bridge, and immediately look left at the first large rock formation. At the foot of a tree, you will find a ring of five hellcaps. This single location provides everything you need for Snaf’s quest in one trip.
However, if you have already picked those up accidentally or want to combine this hunt with other quests, several backup locations exist:
- Nek’s cave, outside the south gate of Old Camp. This cave contains five hellcaps and Solanaceae, the ingredient needed for the quest “The Forgotten Recipe.” By exploring here, you can progress two quests at once.
- The small molerat cave by the bridge at the north gate. Two hellcaps are inside.
- The molerat cave west of town, located along the guarded path that leads to the orcs. Three hellcaps can be found there.
Efficiency tip: If you are also working on “The Forgotten Recipe” and “The Cult’s Recipe,” visit Nek’s cave and the molerat caves. They hold multiple ingredients, including Solanaceae, which saves you extra trips.
Rewards, Daily Refills, and What to Do Next
Once you return to Snaf with 3 bugmeats and 5 hellcaps, he rewards you with 100 experience points, one meatbug ragout, and the recipe to craft more yourself. Meatbug Ragout restores 12 HP, a valuable heal in the early game when healing items are scarce and expensive.
The real prize, however, comes after completion. Snaf will give you a daily supply of meatbug ragout. Based on player reports, you will likely receive a stack of three ragouts each day. Either way, you now have a sustainable healing source that keeps you alive through the dangers of the colony.
Snaf’s Recipe is the quintessential Gothic 1 Remake quest: it demands no violence, rewards careful observation, and sets you up with a renewable health item. By following the bug paths and hellcap rings outlined above, you will not only complete the quest quickly but also learn the game’s core exploration rhythm, one that will serve you through every chapter. Check the ingredient caves for related quest items, grab your daily ragout from Snaf, and move on to the next Old Camp challenge with full HP.
