Rusted Gear in ARC Raiders: A Rare Recyclable, Not a Quest Item, Where to Farm It
Search "rusted gear ARC Raiders" and you will be forgiven for assuming you have missed something important. The results are a mess of retail listings, half-finished forum threads and pages that have nothing to do with the game at all. There is no hidden quest, no secret unlock, no mystery to solve.
Rusted Gear is a Rare, recyclable Industrial material. That is the whole story, and it is a useful one once you understand where it fits in the crafting economy. This guide covers what the item does, how it differs from the similarly named Rusted Tools, and the most reliable route to farm it. All of it is set against the game's current live state: Live Update 2.3.0, which landed on 27 October 2026.

What Rusted Gear Actually Is
According to the community-maintained ARC Raiders Wiki, Rusted Gear is a Rare material found in Industrial loot areas. Its only function is to be recycled into crafting materials. It is not a quest item. It is not a key to a locked door or a hidden progression gate. If you have been holding one in your stash waiting for a prompt to appear, you can stop waiting.
The materials it breaks down into feed the Workshop, the hub where players craft gear, weapons, items and consumables. Every player starts with a free basic workbench that covers early weapons and most ammo types - the Gunsmith bench in particular is a common destination for recycled components, which is part of why demand for Rusted Gear spikes whenever players push their crafting stations forward. The Workshop is where the recycling loop pays off, and it is worth checking your bench requirements before you sell anything off.
For players working through other material bottlenecks, our breakdown of How to Get Planks and Sheet covers the parallel farming routes for those components, and our Arc Raiders Trophy Display Project guide maps out another crafting sink that draws on the same supply lines.
Rusted Gear vs. Rusted Tools: Clearing Up the Confusion
The single biggest source of confusion around this item is its near-namesake. Rusted Tools is a separate Rare recyclable, also found in Mechanical and Industrial areas, but it recycles into metal parts rather than the components Rusted Gear produces.
The two get mixed up for obvious reasons. The names are close, the loot areas overlap, and both appear in the same kinds of containers. The practical distinction is simple: check which item your current bench upgrade actually calls for before you commit a farming run. Grabbing the wrong one wastes a trip, and in an extraction game where every run carries risk, wasted trips add up.
Where to Find Rusted Gear
Rusted Gear spawns inside cars and generators. Both container types appear across every map in the rotation, so you are never far from a potential source.
That broad availability is good news, but there is a far more efficient approach than looting at random. The best route runs through the northwest of Buried City, specifically Warehouse, Marano Station and Parking Garage. These three areas are dense with generators and vehicles, and a focused run through them will typically yield several Rusted Gears.
Each stop has its own priority. In Warehouse, look for two generators sitting next to each other on the eastern side of the building - both have a high chance of containing the item. At Marano Station, breach every car hood in the car park on the north end of the station. It takes time, because there are a lot of cars, but the payoff is consistent. Parking Garage is the third leg, and the approach there is the same principle: sweep the parked vehicles rather than the open floor, since the loot sits in the cars themselves.
The route is not quick, largely because of the breaching involved, but it ends well: you finish up right next to a metro for extraction. One caveat worth stating plainly - the item-level location detail here rests on the community wiki and reporting from outlets that have mapped the route, not on an official Embark spawn table. Treat it as a strong working guide rather than gospel, and expect minor variance between runs.
Why It Matters Right Now
Update 2.3.0 arrived on 27 October 2026 and added the Noxious Set, a new player project and a long list of fixes and adjustments. Embark's own patch post instructs players to restart the game to download it, so if your client has not updated, that is the fix. The patch did not touch Rusted Gear directly - nothing in the notes changes its drop locations or recycling output - but any update that adds a player project adds new material demand somewhere in the economy, and that ripple is worth watching. One point of caution: a report from Vice names the new player project "Souls Offering," but Embark's patch notes and the wiki describe only "a new player project" without that name in the captured text. Verify against the live patch notes before treating the name as confirmed.
That release followed Update 2.0 "Frozen Trail" on 8 October 2026, which Embark billed as its biggest update since launch. The 2026 cadence has been relentless, with Frozen Trail and 2.3.0 only the most recent examples. Each drop reshuffles what players are crafting and therefore which materials are in demand. A Rare recyclable that sat untouched in your stash last month may be the bottleneck this month, which is why it pays to check the patch notes after every drop rather than assuming your stockpile is still relevant.
The Practical Checklist
Do not go hunting for a mystery. Rusted Gear is a crafting input, and the fastest way to get it is to farm deliberately rather than passively.
Run the Buried City northwest circuit: the two adjacent generators on Warehouse's eastern side, then the car hoods in Marano Station's north car park, then the vehicles in Parking Garage. Expect a handful per run and extract via the nearby metro. Recycle what you do not need at the Workshop, and keep Rusted Tools mentally separate so you never hand the wrong material to the wrong bench.
With Update 2.3.0 live and more content clearly on the way, the material economy will keep moving. Bookmark the official patch notes and check them after each drop - it is the only way to know which recyclable is about to become the one everybody is searching for.
