Phasmophobia has sold more than 30 million copies across PC and console, Kinetic Games confirmed to Eurogamer. For a game whose creator once hoped to move 1,000 units in its first year, the milestone is a striking measure of how far the indie horror title has come. It arrives alongside the return of the Crimson Eye Halloween event, running October 8 through November 1, 2026, and against the news that the game's long-awaited 1.0 launch has slipped once again, now targeting the second half of 2027.
From 1,000 Copies to 30 Million
The scale of Phasmophobia's commercial performance is difficult to overstate. The 30 million figure represents a significant jump from the roughly 25 million copies reported in late 2025, according to prior Kinetic Games statements, an additional five million sales in under a year, for a game that has never left Early Access.
Phasmophobia launched on Steam Early Access on September 18, 2020, priced at $14. It rose to prominence during Halloween 2020, propelled by Twitch streamers and YouTubers who found in its simple loop of investigating haunted locations and identifying ghost types a uniquely watchable blend of tension and comedy. Knight, who built the game largely on his own, has since become one of the more visible independent developers in the industry, and the 1,000-copy target he once set has become a favourite anecdote among the game's community.
Today, Phasmophobia is available in Early Access on Steam, PS5, PS VR2, and Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch 2 version has been confirmed, though no release date has been announced. A 2027 listing that appears on Wikipedia's infobox should be treated as an unverified placeholder rather than a firm window.
What the Crimson Eye Event Brings
The Crimson Eye event, now in its second consecutive year as the game's annual "Blood Moon" celebration, introduces a risk-and-reward twist to standard investigations. A blood moon weather condition rotates through eight maps each day, including 6 Tanglewood Drive, Grafton Farmhouse, Camp Woodwind, and Nell's Diner, with Point Hope restricted to Standard difficulty.
Under the blood moon, ghosts move faster and sanity drains more quickly than usual. The trade-off is that successful investigations pay out more, a design choice that encourages players to weigh caution against greed.
Rewards are split between community-wide and personal goals:
- Community goals: Beholder ID Card and Badge, plus the Blood Moon Trophy
- Personal goals: Blood Moon Charm, a seasonal t-shirt, and upgrades to the Crimson Eye trophy for returning players
One scheduling detail worth noting: the enabling patch for Crimson Eye deployed on October 7, one day before the event formally began. Kinetic Games issued an edit clarifying the date shift, confirming the patch moved ahead of the event's October 8 start.
Twitch Drops, Double XP, and Ghost Hunts 4 Hearts
As in previous years, the Crimson Eye event is structured in phases, giving players multiple reasons to return across the month.
From October 8 to 15, watching two hours of Phasmophobia streams on Twitch earns a Crimson Eye t-shirt cosmetic. It is a low-effort entry point for lapsed players and a boost for content creators covering the event.
The Double XP & Rewards window runs October 15 through 22, doubling all rewards from completed investigations. For anyone who has fallen off the game and wants to catch up on progression, this is the week to prioritise.
The event closes with the return of Ghost Hunts 4 Hearts, running October 26 through November 1 in support of the American Heart Association. Kinetic Games has said last year's campaign raised more than $100,000 for the charity, a figure that speaks to the strength of the Phasmophobia community.
Why 1.0 Is Now Slated for 2027
The Crimson Eye celebration arrives against a backdrop of development news that has divided parts of the community. Phasmophobia's 1.0 release has been delayed from its previous 2026 target to the second half of 2027. Kinetic Games has framed the decision as a matter of prioritising quality over speed, a philosophy consistent with a game that has remained in Early Access for nearly six years.
The studio has said that sneak peeks of development, including ghost design and gameplay overhauls, will begin next year, giving players something concrete to follow as the wait continues.
That caution may be informed by recent experience. Kinetic Games apologised for its Player Character Update, acknowledging that it "missed the mark" in the eyes of many players. Rebuilding trust after a misstep of that kind takes time, and rushing a 1.0 launch on the back of it would risk compounding the damage.
There is also the matter of the studio's broader ambitions. Kinetic Games launched a publishing arm, Kinetic Publishing, earlier this year. Its first title, Contact Protocol, is due in Spring 2027, according to the studio. The move signals that Kinetic is thinking beyond a single game, even as Phasmophobia remains its defining project.
A Franchise That Still Refuses to Call Itself Finished
There is a strange symmetry to Phasmophobia's current moment. A game that once hoped to sell 1,000 copies is now a 30-million-selling franchise. And yet, by its own developer's admission, it is still not finished.
The Crimson Eye event captures that era well. It is generous, community-driven, and confident enough to take its time. There is no panic here, no attempt to rush a milestone launch to capitalise on a sales high, only a Halloween event with a clear structure, a charity drive with a proven track record, and a development roadmap that stretches well into 2027.
Whether that patience reads as admirable or frustrating will depend entirely on the player. What is not in question is the trajectory. Phasmophobia has long since outgrown the expectations of its creator, and the coming year will bring the first real glimpses of what a finished version might look like. The 1.0 sneak peeks, the undated Switch 2 port, and the question of whether 2027 finally sticks are the threads to watch. For now, the blood moon is rising again, and 30 million players have a reason to come back.
