On October 21, 2026, EA closed BioWare after 31 years and ended early development on the next Mass Effect. Nine days later, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported the reason behind the decision: executives weighed Mass Effect: Universe against an unannounced Star Wars: Battlefront 3 as mutually exclusive, hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars bets, and chose to fund the Star Wars shooter. The report suggests Mass Effect 5 was reportedly killed to make room for a project attached to a bigger license, a trade-off that has left a 31-year studio and a defining RPG franchise in its wake.
What follows separates carefully between what EA has confirmed on the record and what remains reported through anonymous sourcing. The closure and the cancellation are fact. The Star Wars explanation, however well sourced, is not.
What EA Actually Confirmed
The official record is short and stark. BioWare is closing after more than 30 years, early development on the next Mass Effect has ended, and roughly 400 EA staff were laid off, about 3% of the company. Around 50 of those roles were at BioWare itself.
The timing stings. The next Mass Effect was announced at The Game Awards in December 2020, which means it was cancelled nearly six years after its reveal. A Mass Effect 5 trailer was reportedly ready before the closure, which complicates EA's framing of the project as being in early development.
EA's on-record statement said only that the decision followed "months of planning, review, and analysis." Star Wars is not mentioned. Separately, EA has confirmed that DICE and Respawn are collaborating on an unannounced project, widely linked to Battlefront 3 but never named by the publisher.

The Report: Two Bets, One Budget
Bloomberg's October 30 report is the source of the causal claim. According to Schreier's reporting, Mass Effect: Universe and an unannounced Battlefront 3 were treated as mutually exclusive options, and EA funded the Star Wars shooter.
Around 50 BioWare staff were working on Mass Effect: Universe at the time. The Battlefront 3 project had not entered development when the choice was made, meaning it was greenlit in place of Mass Effect: Universe rather than already in production.
Why did EA lean Star Wars? Reporting also cites EA's historic preference for and experience with shooters, such as Battlefield 6, and the larger Star Wars license. Contributing factors include the poor commercial performance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which was framed internally as BioWare's "last chance," and EA's restructuring following its $55 billion take-private deal.
The Human Aftermath
The corporate arithmetic has a human cost, and the community has been vocal about it. An internal Mass Effect: Universe trailer leaked shortly after the closure, featuring Liara and returning characters. Major outlets reported the footage as authentic-looking; our breakdown of the Mass Effect: Universe trailer leak covers what it actually shows.
Former writers and the art director have spoken out publicly. Composer Austin Wintory released 22 minutes of music written for the cancelled game, and Sam Hulick offered to rescore the leaked trailer for N7 Day, the annual Mass Effect community celebration.
Fans have organized too. The Change.org "Save Mass Effect" petition climbed from roughly 180,000 to more than 240,000 signatures within days, with Shepard voice actors Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer backing the effort. That surge follows the petition's rapid growth in the days after BioWare's closure, from roughly 180,000 signatures to more than 240,000.
Post-cancellation reports also suggest the story would have accounted for choices from the original trilogy, alongside Hitman-style mission freedom. Those details remain at the low-confidence level their sourcing warrants, but they sketch a picture of Mass Effect 5's Cancelled Vision that fans are still processing.
The Counter-Narrative: Zeschuk and the Take-Private
BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk has offered a different explanation. He called EA's $55 billion Saudi-led take-private the "final nail in the coffin" for Mass Effect, pointing to new ownership and cost discipline rather than a single project decision.
The two accounts are best read as complementary. Bloomberg covers the immediate, project-level decision; Zeschuk addresses the structural context in which that decision was made. Neither cancels the other out.
The closure landed as a shock partly because executive producer Mike Gamble said in November 2025 that the studio was focused exclusively on Mass Effect, and an April 2026 update suggested work was continuing. BioWare itself was founded in 1995 in Edmonton by Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip, and was acquired by EA in 2007; its catalogue runs from Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights through Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Anthem. What Battlefront 3 Inherits
If the reporting holds, Battlefront 3 arrives with baggage that has nothing to do with its own development. Star Wars: Battlefront II's loot-box controversy and the infamous "sense of pride and accomplishment" comment remain a cautionary tale, and a third entry inherits that reputational debt.
It also inherits a more specific burden: arriving as the project that reportedly outbid Mass Effect. The commercial upside of the Star Wars license is obvious. The fan ill-will is harder to price.
What to watch is narrow. Whether EA ever names the DICE and Respawn project, and any N7 Day activity.
The Arithmetic of a 31-Year Studio
Set the numbers side by side. A team of roughly 50 people. A studio with 31 years of history, by our count; EA's own statement says only "more than 30." A franchise-defining RPG cancelled nearly six years after its reveal. On the other side of the ledger, a shooter on a bigger license that had not yet entered development when the choice was made.
That trade-off rests on Bloomberg's reporting. The closure and the cancellation do not; they are fact, confirmed by EA on October 21.
For now, the artifacts of Mass Effect: Universe are a leaked trailer and more than 240,000 signatures on a petition that is still climbing. N7 Day is the next moment the community will be heard, and this year it arrives with more to mourn than to celebrate.
