LittleBigPlanet 3, the last mainline entry in the series, arrived in 2014. Sackboy: A Big Adventure, the last game fronted by Sackboy, landed in 2020. Yet if you open PlayStation's store today, LittleBigPlanet 3 is still there, still selling itself on the promise of "millions of home-built levels" from a global community of creators. That gap - between a brand that is still on sale and a series that has not had a new mainline entry in more than a decade - is where this story lives.
So there are two questions worth asking in 2026. What actually exists in the LittleBigPlanet games catalogue today, and what is the studio that started it all doing instead? One important note before we go further: Media Molecule's next project is reported, not announced. Neither Sony nor the studio has confirmed it, and that distinction matters throughout.
Every LittleBigPlanet Game, Studio by Studio
The original LittleBigPlanet launched on PlayStation 3 in 2008, developed by UK studio Media Molecule, co-founded by Mark Healey. Its "Play, Create, Share" philosophy - build a level, publish it, let strangers play it - became a PlayStation signature and gave the platform one of its most recognisable mascots in Sackboy.
LittleBigPlanet 2 followed from Media Molecule, expanding the creation toolkit considerably. From there, the franchise spread outward across studios and platforms in a way few PlayStation series have.
LittleBigPlanet PSP arrived in 2009 from SCEE Cambridge Studio. LittleBigPlanet PS Vita came from Double Eleven. LittleBigPlanet Karting was handled by United Front Games with San Diego Studio, taking the formula into racing with track and kart creation tools. And LittleBigPlanet 3, developed by Sumo Digital with Media Molecule, landed on PS3 and PS4 as the last mainline entry, adding OddSock, Swoop and Toggle alongside Sackboy on planet Bunkum.
The most recent Sackboy game is Sackboy: A Big Adventure, developed by Sumo Digital and released on 12 November 2020, later arriving on PC. It supports 1 to 4 player co-op and remains the newest title carrying the character's name.
That patchwork of developers and platforms is precisely why the franchise's modern footprint feels so fragmented. There is no single studio tending the garden, and no single platform holding the whole back catalogue together. Practically speaking, the back catalogue is the franchise right now: LittleBigPlanet 3 remains listed on PlayStation's store, whose page still advertises playing "millions of home-built levels" from the global LBP community, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure is still available across PS5, PS4 and PC. For returning players, the games are there to play - and in LBP3's case, user-generated levels remain the reason a 2014 release still has something to offer.
Sackboy's Fading Mascot Status
There is a quieter story running alongside the release calendar. In May 2025, IGN reported that Sackboy was absent from the PlayStation Productions banner at the start of the Until Dawn movie, as noted by Realradec.
The observation is worth noting carefully. Sackboy was once positioned alongside PlayStation's biggest faces - a character synonymous with the platform's family-friendly creative streak. His absence from that marketing lineup suggests a character no longer being used in that way. This is an observation about marketing, not an official retirement, and it should be read as such. But it is difficult to ignore the signal.
Media Molecule After Dreams
Media Molecule's most recent release was Dreams in 2020, a creation platform in the same imaginative spirit as LittleBigPlanet. Live support for Dreams ended in September 2023, and the studio has been working on an unannounced project since.
In May 2026, MP1st reported that the new game features "open-world content," with IGN covering the report on 25 May 2026. A later MP1st report described the project as a social-sim in the vein of Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon, with 2027 framing attached.
That framing deserves scrutiny. MP1st's headline says the game will be revealed in 2027, while IGN's write-up of the same report describes it as a game that "may release next year" (2027). The ambiguity has not been resolved, and neither Sony nor Media Molecule has confirmed anything about the project at all.
What the studio's own site says is telling. Media Molecule's official games page still lists only LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway and Dreams - no new title, and no LBP branding on the reported project.
Is LittleBigPlanet Coming Back?
Nothing in the reporting points to a franchise revival. Both outlets describe a new IP, and the official record shows no new LittleBigPlanet listing anywhere.
Weigh the evidence on both sides. On one hand, an active store page and a community still building levels demonstrate that the brand retains commercial and cultural life. On the other, more than a decade has passed without a new mainline entry, and the character who fronted the series is no longer appearing in the platform holder's marketing.
What would count as a genuine signal? An official announcement from Sony or Media Molecule. An LBP-branded store listing. A developer credit tied to the franchise. What we have instead is a set of reports about something else entirely - and no official announcement of a new LittleBigPlanet from Sony or Media Molecule.
The Distance Between a Brand and Its Creator
LittleBigPlanet is still playable, still populated by community levels, and still sold on the promise of them. The studio that created it is reportedly building something else entirely - an open-world social-sim with no LBP branding attached. Until Sony or Media Molecule says otherwise, the series lives in its back catalogue: LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2, the PSP and Vita entries, Karting, LittleBigPlanet 3 and Sackboy: A Big Adventure are the mainline and spin-off games the sources document, and they are worth revisiting on their own terms. Watch for official word before treating any 2027 talk as settled.
