The Leak, What We Know So Far
The first sighting came from a sharp-eyed Reddit user browsing the Xbox Game Hub for the original Wildlands. The screenshot they captured shows a tile advertising the Definitive Edition with a “Next Gen” badge, listing 4K resolution and 60FPS performance as key features alongside the promise of a new mission. The image was posted to the /r/GhostReconWildlands subreddit, where it quickly spread through gaming circles. The screenshot was later confirmed by Eurogamer and Insider Gaming. But Ubisoft has remained silent, no official trailer, no store listing, no teaser tweet. The edition is reportedly targeting only PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, skipping PC, which already supports higher framerates. The original game launched in March 2017, placing the Definitive Edition squarely in the realm of a 10th anniversary push, albeit arriving a few months early if the rumoured late 2026 or early 2027 release window (based on the game’s 10th anniversary in March 2027) holds.

Remaster or Re-release? Ubisoft’s Definitive Edition History
To understand what the Wildlands Definitive Edition might actually deliver, it helps to look back at Ubisoft’s track record with similar labels. The publisher has a long history of releasing “Definitive” and “Gold Edition” reissues that bundle all downloadable content with the base game but offer little more than a resolution bump or a performance unlock. Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection gave players a higher-resolution version of the trilogy but kept original models and textures. Far Cry 3: Classic Edition was essentially the same game with a slightly better frame rate. None of them remade assets, added ray tracing, or rebuilt environments.
The same pattern holds for more recent next-gen upgrades. Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the series’ successor, received a free 60FPS patch for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S that unlocked the frame rate without improving textures or lighting. Ubisoft clearly views such performance boosts as sufficient for current-gen adoption. There is no evidence in the Wildlands leak to suggest anything more ambitious. The advert mentions “4K resolution” and “60FPS” but says nothing about improved draw distances, higher-quality textures, or reworked models. By comparison, a true remaster, like The Last of Us Part I or Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, involves substantial reworking of art assets, lighting systems, and physics. Ubisoft has not invested that level of effort in any of its previous Definitive Editions, and there is no reason to expect it will do so for a game that will turn ten years old in 2027. The simplest technical explanation is that Wildlands Definitive Edition will be the base game with a 60FPS unlock and a native 4K render target, running on backwards compatibility infrastructure but sold as a standalone product. That would be a welcome upgrade for console players stuck at 30FPS, but it is far from a remaster.

What the Community Wants vs. What’s Likely
On forums and social media, Wildlands fans have long called for a 60FPS option on current-gen hardware. Backwards compatibility on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S runs the PS4 Pro version at a capped 30FPS, which feels sluggish compared to the fluid 60FPS many modern shooters offer. A simple frame rate unlock would instantly make the game play better, and that alone would satisfy a large portion of the community. However, some players have also voiced hopes for rebuilt textures, improved draw distances, and perhaps even ray-traced lighting to bring Bolivia’s sprawling landscapes into the modern era. The leak provides no evidence for any of those enhancements.
The new mission is the wildcard. It could be a short tie-in to the 10th anniversary, maybe a flashback or a new cartel operation that fits seamlessly into the existing map. Ubisoft has occasionally released bonus missions for reissues, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was a standalone spin-off, but that was a full expansion, not a single mission. More realistically, expect something similar to the “New Game+” updates or challenge missions that Ubisoft has added to other titles. Cross-progression between generations has also been a recurring request, but the leak gives no hint of save file support, and Ubisoft has not confirmed any such feature.
Given the publisher’s history, the most likely outcome is a stripped-down upgrade: bundle all existing DLC (including the excellent Fallen Ghosts campaign and the Ghost War PvP mode), unlock 60FPS, raise the resolution to 4K, add one new mission, and sell the whole package for a reasonable price. That would be a solid value for new players and a decent upgrade for veterans, but it would not win any awards for technical ambition.
What Lies Ahead for Wildlands
So where does that leave players? If the leak is accurate, and multiple sources have now backed it up, Ubisoft is likely to announce the Ghost Recon Wildlands Definitive Edition in the coming months, with a release around late 2026 or early 2027 to capitalise on the 10th anniversary nostalgia. Pricing is unknown, but typical Definitive Editions launch between $39.99 and $49.99 for the complete package. Current owners of the original game on last-gen consoles may receive an affordable upgrade path, though Ubisoft has not confirmed that. Newcomers will get the entire Wildlands experience in one box, with the best performance available on console.
The core question, remaster or re-release, seems to have a clear answer. All signs point to a bare-minimum re-release with a performance patch and bundled content, not a ground-up remaster. That will disappoint those hoping for a graphical overhaul, but for the majority of players who just want to explore Bolivia at 60FPS, the Definitive Edition will still be exactly that: the definitive way to play Ghost Recon Wildlands on modern hardware. Ubisoft just needs to confirm the details and put the ghost to rest.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The Definitive Edition is expected on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
