"My mom became a crater."
That is the first line of the new teaser for Death Stranding Isolations, and it tells you almost everything about what this series is not. After nearly a year of silence since the project was announced under a working title in November 2025, Kojima Productions has finally revealed the Death Stranding Isolations teaser, and confirmed the series is hand-drawn 2D animation with its own characters, its own story, and a 2027 release on Disney+.
The teaser went live on the studio's official YouTube channel in late October 2026, timed to the eve of its 10th anniversary exhibition in Tokyo. Here is what the trailer confirms, what it leaves unanswered, and where the series fits among the studio's growing slate of Death Stranding projects.
What the Death Stranding Isolations Teaser Hand-Drawn Style Reveals
The teaser centers on a young girl living in isolation in the wake of the Death Stranding. Her opening line about her mother becoming a crater sets the tone immediately: this is a story about grief, loss, and a world that has already ended for the people inside it.
There is a wrinkle worth clarifying. The official description states that the series follows a young man and a woman on an adventure, while the teaser itself focuses almost entirely on the girl. Both are accurate. The young girl remains the emotional focus of the first preview, while the studio's description says the series follows a young man and woman on an adventure.
The Studio and Staff Behind It
The hand-drawn look is not a stylistic accident. Isolations is being produced in traditional 2D animation by E&H Production, the Japanese studio behind Ninja Kamui and Bullet/Bullet. Takayuki Sano directs, and Hideo Kojima serves as executive producer.
That combination matters. Choosing hand-drawn 2D instead of 3D rendering signals that Isolations is meant to stand as its own anime identity rather than a promotional tie-in.
What the studio has not announced is just as notable: there is no cast list and no exact premiere date. For a project arriving within roughly a year, those details will need to surface soon.
Where and When You Can Watch
Isolations will stream exclusively on Disney+ and other Disney services in 2027; Game Informer reports it is coming exclusively to Disney+ and Hulu.
The project was first revealed as a working title at the Disney+ Originals Preview at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort in November 2025, where the 2027 window was announced alongside it. Some coverage has described the release as coming "next year," which from an October 2026 vantage point means the same thing. Either way, treat it as a window rather than a date.
One Franchise, Three Adaptations
It is easy to conflate Isolations with the other Death Stranding screen projects, so a scorecard helps.
There is a separate animated feature in production under the working title Death Stranding Mosquito, with Hiroshi Miyamoto directing at ABC Animation Studio and Aaron Guzikowski writing an original story. That is a film, not the series.
Then there is the live-action Death Stranding movie in development with A24 and Hammerstone Studios. Michael Sarnoski is attached to write and direct, with Lars Knudsen and Ari Aster's Square Peg producing, and Sarnoski has been scouting locations in Iceland.
Three adaptations, three formats, all running at once, and they sit alongside a wider production slate. For a studio whose founder has publicly wrestled with the industry's direction, the pivot toward authored, hand-drawn animation is a deliberate statement about where the value in this franchise sits.
The 10th Anniversary Context
The teaser did not arrive in a vacuum. It landed alongside "BEYOND THE STRAND: The Odyssey of Creation and Endeavor," an exhibition running 31 October through 20 December 2026 at Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo.
The lineup is a fan's dream: the first public display of the original Death Stranding prototype, early Death Stranding 2 ending proposals, a recreated red door from OD - KNOCK, and a 360-degree video installation.
Scheduling a forward-looking teaser against a retrospective of the studio's first decade is a deliberate piece of messaging. It tells audiences that Kojima Productions is not resting on the games that made its name, even as it celebrates them.
What We Still Do Not Know
The teaser answers the questions that mattered most. We know the visual style is hand-drawn 2D, the studio is E&H Production, the director is Takayuki Sano, and the premise is standalone rather than an adaptation of Sam Porter Bridges' journey. On the canon question, the sources disagree: Kojima Productions' press release describes "a completely new story, separate from that of the video games," while some outlets report the series is set immediately after the events of the first game, and others say it follows isolated people during the same period as Sam Bridges' journey across the continent.
What remains open is the cast and a firm date, and those gaps will define how the next year of coverage unfolds. For now, Isolations is the clearest signal yet that Kojima Productions intends Death Stranding to outgrow its games entirely.
Those in Tokyo can see the exhibition through 20 December. Everyone else has the teaser, a confirmed 2027 window, and two announcements, cast and premiere date, still to come.
