007 First Light Guide: Two Creative Ways to Get Into Utility (Wave of the Future Mission)

Why the Utility Door Is Locked, The Sandbox Philosophy

"Get into Utility" appears in "Wave of the Future," the penultimate chapter of 007 First Light (Chapter 9 of the main story, Chapter 16 overall). The mission is set in a Webb R&D facility in Antarctica, and Bond's direct entry to the Utility sector is blocked by a clearance-locked door. The puzzle forces you to use the robotics testing room's research tests to trigger an automated door opening.

True to the studio's Hitman roots, there's no single correct path. Both methods rely on manipulating robots that have direct access to the Utility sector. This emergent problem-solving, using the environment and its objects as tools, is classic IO Interactive design. Before starting the mission, check your loadout. One method may require specific gadgets like the Q-Watch (your multi-purpose hacking tool) or the Dart (a silent, precise projectile launcher), so plan accordingly.

Method 1, The Cleaning Robot (Easier, Low-Gadget Requires Precision)

This method is the quicker of the two and requires minimal gadgetry, though a little shooting accuracy is key.

Step 1: Use the Q-Watch to hack the shooting range's rear wall. This lowers the wall, exposing the area beyond.

Step 2: Beyond the wall, you'll see a cleaning robot carrying a chemical barrel. Shoot the barrel off the robot's back. A silenced pistol works, but the Dart gadget makes this step much easier, the Dart's precision allows you to hit the barrel from a safe distance without alerting guards. If you didn't bring the Dart, a well-placed shot with a suppressor will do the job.

Step 3: The explosion will cause cleaning robots to spill out of the area. One of these robots will head directly toward the Utility door and automatically open it.

Step 4: Follow the cleaning robot through the door before it closes again. Timing is important, you want to be close enough to slip through while the door is open.

After entry: Once inside Utility, shoot the electrical panel on the left with an R1 E.S.P. shot (special ammunition that can overload electronics) to power the elevator and proceed with the mission.

This method is straightforward and low-risk, but it does require the chemical barrel to be triggered at just the right moment. Wait until the cleaning robot is right behind the lowered wall to ensure the spill and explosion happen in the correct spot.

Method 2, The Mimic Robot (More Involved, Requires Hacking)

The Mimic Robot route is a bit more complex but doesn't require the Dart gadget at all. Instead, it leans on hacking and robot interaction.

Step 1: Locate a laptop in the robotics room. Hack it to access the heat controls for the yoga test area.

Step 2: Adjust the heat to clear the yoga zone of obstacles and personnel. This opens a path for the mimic robot to move freely.

Step 3: Interact with the mimic robot. Guide it to smash through a glass panel, then have it kick a trolley. This reveals an electrical panel hidden behind the trolley.

Step 4: Hack the exposed panel with the Q-Watch. This action will open the Utility door.

Step 5: Enter Utility and again shoot the electrical panel on the left with R1 E.S.P. rounds to unlock the elevator.

The mimic robot has a limited range, so stay close during the glass-smashing step to ensure it follows your commands. This method takes a little more setup, but it's satisfyingly clean and gadget-light, all you need is the Q-Watch and standard weaponry.

Unlocking the "First Day at Work" Challenge

"Wave of the Future" has 24 challenges total, including stealth, pacifist, and combat objectives. "First Day at Work" is a completionist challenge that requires using both robotics opportunities, the Cleaning Robot and the Mimic Robot, in a single playthrough.

Why do it? Unlocking all challenges contributes to 100% completion and achievement/trophy progression. It also showcases the full depth of the sandbox design. The challenge name is a clever nod to Bond's first day on the job, as you're using the lab's own robots against themselves.

Strategy: To unlock "First Day at Work," you must use both robot opportunities in a single continuous playthrough without reloading a save. The game tracks both actions before you leave the area, so you can do the Cleaning Robot method first, then the Mimic Robot method in the same run, no need to reload. If you prefer to practice each separately, you can save before the puzzle and reload after trying one, but the challenge will only unlock if you complete both without reloading.

Gadget loadout hint: Bring the Q-Watch, R1 E.S.P. rounds, and optionally the Dart gadget (for the first method) to avoid any awkwardness. Plan your gadgets before starting the mission.

Tips for Smooth Execution

  • Camera and stealth: The robotics room is patrolled by guards. Use stealth takedowns or distractions to avoid alerts while setting up robot manipulations. A silenced pistol is your best friend here.
  • Q-Watch mastery: Both methods require hacking terminals, robots, and panels. The standard Q-Watch works fine, but if you have an upgraded version, it may speed up the process.
  • Chemical barrel safety: In Method 1, be careful not to shoot the barrel too early. Wait until the cleaning robot is right behind the lowered wall to ensure the robot is affected by the spill.
  • Mimic robot guidance: Stay close during the glass-smashing step. The mimic robot will follow your commands only if you're within its interaction range.
  • After utility: Once the elevator is accessible, the mission continues toward the finale. Keep your gadgets handy for upcoming stealth encounters, the Antarctic facility has more surprises.

A Sandbox Lesson Worth Repeating

The "Get into Utility" puzzle in 007 First Light's Wave of the Future mission perfectly encapsulates IO Interactive's design philosophy: there's never just one way to solve a problem. Whether you prefer the gadget-assisted Cleaning Robot trick or the hacking-heavy Mimic Robot route, both methods reward observation and creativity. Completing both in a single playthrough unlocks the "First Day at Work" challenge, giving completionists a reason to replay the mission. With its acclaimed sandbox design and strong reception from players, 007 First Light proves that Bond and IO's style are a match made in heaven.
