The Valheim world generator is not a feature built into Valheim. It is a set of unofficial browser tools. Some, such as valheimmap.com, run the game's own world generation; others, such as valheimworldgenerator.blogspot.com, offer only an approximate procedural preview and say plainly that it is not a replica of Valheim's official generation algorithm. Check which kind you are using before you plan around a map. Since 1.0 launched, a map's layout is locked to seed plus game version, so a tool is only trustworthy if it tracks the current build. Check each tool's update note against the patch you actually play before you trust a map.

What you need before you open a seed map

You do not need to own anything special, but a little preparation saves a lot of retyping.

  • Valheim on PC. The browser tools read a seed string or a world save file. They are not part of the game, and Iron Gate does not make or endorse them.
  • A seed string to test, either a new one you type in or the seed of an existing world. To find an existing world's seed, highlight the world on the world-select screen and read the seed shown there, or find it via the world-select screen (singleplayer) or the server console / Player.log (multiplayer). Note that since 1.0 a world is saved as a folder named after the world; a pre-1.0 world is a .fwl and .db pair.
  • A current browser tool. The main options are valheimmap.com, valheim.th.gl, valheim.gaming.tools, vga.run, valheim.tools and valheimatlas.com. Check each tool's update note for which patch its generator matches.
  • Knowledge of your game version. Generation is locked to seed plus patch number, so match the tool's stated version to the build you actually play. Valheim's main menu shows the current build.
  • Optional extras: the "Realtime Map from seed" mod or the Overwolf companion app if you want the browser map to follow a running game or read a save file.

Step 1: Understand what the world generator actually does

The world generator is a community project, not an Iron Gate feature. These tools reproduce the game's generation algorithm to plot biomes, bosses, traders (Haldor and Hildir), dungeons and other points of interest.

A world seed is a short text string that seeds Valheim's pseudorandom number generator. The same seed yields the same layout for any given game version. Change one character and you get an entirely different world, which is why the seed you enter has to be exact.

This matters more now than it did in Early Access. Valheim left Early Access with Valheim 1.0 Comes to Switch 2 in September 2026, adding the Deep North as the final biome. Pre-1.0 generators do not know that biome exists.

Step 2: Verify the tool matches your patch

Tool freshness is the single most important variable after 1.0. A generator that has not stated which patch it matches can quietly hand you a wrong map.

  1. Check the tool's own update notes. Valheim.tools states its generator is byte-identical to 1.0.17 and that 1.0.20 only changed how the zone code marks cheated objects (valheim.tools 1.0.20 update page, 15 October 2026).
  2. Cross-check the label. valheimmap.com labels itself as covering 1.0.20. That is compatible with the above, since the generator logic is unchanged even though the tools have been updated for the newer patch.
  3. Avoid any tool that does not state a 1.0-era version. A pre-1.0 generator will not include the Deep North, its landmarks or its boss altar.

Patch 1.0.17 itself fixed a rare bug that could erase all objects in parts of the world when a large world save chunk file was split into smaller ones, which is worth knowing if you plan to carry an existing world forward.

Step 3: Enter the seed exactly and set the version

This is where most mistakes happen.

  1. Copy the seed rather than retyping it. Enter it exactly as shown; community tools treat seeds as case-sensitive, and a single changed character produces a different world.
  2. Paste the seed into the tool's seed field.
  3. Set the world version in the tool to the game version the world was created on (or today's version for a new world), because generation has changed between big updates.
  4. For an existing world, use the version it was created on rather than today's build.

One note before you evaluate the map: old Early Access worlds load and remain playable in 1.0, but they may lack 1.0 world-generation changes in already-explored areas. Decide whether you are checking a fresh seed or a legacy world, because it changes what you are looking for.

Step 4: Read the valheim seed map for a good start

Once the map draws, you are looking for five things.

  • Starting area. A large Meadows region near spawn with Black Forest close by gives you building room and early resources without long travel.
  • Biome accessibility. Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain and Plains should all be within a reasonable sail. The Ashlands sit at the southern edge of the world and the Deep North at the northern edge, so both are a long trip on every seed.
  • Boss altars. Check that the boss altars are spread sensibly; if the early ones are each on a different far-flung island, progression turns into more sailing than fighting.
  • Trader position. Haldor appears in a random Black Forest location, and Hildir's camp spawns separately. If either lands on the far side of the map, reaching them early is hard, so check both before you commit.
  • Dungeons and crypts. A healthy cluster of Burial Chambers and Sunken Crypts near your planned base keeps the early game moving. Check that Burial Chambers and Sunken Crypts appear near your planned base; the seed maps list both as layers you can inspect.

Step 5: Check 1.0-specific goals before committing

Valheim 1.0 goals change what a "good" seed looks like.

  1. Confirm the map includes the Deep North and its landmarks and new boss altar. A 1.0-era tool should show them. valheimatlas.com states its generator now builds 1.0 worlds including the Deep North, the landmarks up there and the new boss altar, checked against a real 1.0 game map.
  2. Treat community seed lists as picks, not guarantees. Lists are curated for 1.0 goals such as close bosses, clustered traders, Forge of Potential access and Deep North proximity, but the claims belong to the list authors.
  3. Scout resources, not just bosses. vga.run's recent updates add gathering layers (berries, mushrooms, scrap iron), creature hunting grounds and Ashlands ruin symbols. That is useful if you want to plan a base around materials rather than altar distance.

If you are chasing the Forge of Potential specifically, our guide on How to Use Battle Idols and Protection Idols in Valheim and Find the Forge of Potential covers what it unlocks.

Step 6: Carry the seed into the game

Once you have a layout you like:

  1. Write the seed down exactly as entered.
  2. Enter it when creating the world in-game.
  3. For a group, use the same seed on your server so everyone shares the layout.

If you want live tracking, the "Realtime Map from seed" mod links a running game to the browser map, and the Overwolf app reads a world save or typed seed into an interactive map with biomes, rivers, boss altars, dungeons, traders and camps.

Common mistakes that ruin a seed check

  • Trusting a tool that has not stated its patch. Pre-1.0 generators miss the Deep North and its boss altar, and any generation change between versions makes the map wrong.
  • Typing the seed with the wrong case. Community tools treat seeds as case-sensitive, so a capital letter swapped for a lowercase one can give you a different world. Copy and paste instead.
  • Assuming the generator is official. It is not. If a tool breaks, no patch is coming from the developer.
  • Using an old save editor on a 1.0 world. Treat most older community tools as pre-1.0 until their authors confirm 1.0 support.
  • Judging a seed only by boss proximity. Trader position and early-biome access matter just as much for the first several hours.

Plan your first 1.0 run around the seed you picked

Shortlist two or three seeds and compare starting island, boss altar spread and Haldor's position side by side before you spawn. Decide whether you are starting fresh for the Deep North or carrying a legacy world forward, and remember that legacy worlds may miss 1.0 generation changes in explored areas.

After future patches, check the tool update notes again. The generator logic has held since 1.0.17, but any world-generation change would invalidate saved seed maps until the tools catch up. Iron Gate has confirmed more content updates after 1.0 without giving dates or details, so the version check is the habit worth keeping.
