The short answer: Charting the Unknown is the first paid expansion for Crimson Desert Enhanced, priced at $24.99 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games Store. Buy it, apply the day-one update, then clear "Howling Hill" to sail and "Journey's End" for everything else.
The expansion went live on 29 October 2026 at 22:00 UTC (3pm PT / 11pm CET, rolling into 30 October in Korea and Japan), as Charting the Unknown arrived across all four storefronts (the expansion was originally set for October 15, 2026 and moved to October 29 on September 30). Nothing is handed to you on a plate: the ocean, castles and marriage are all gated behind base-game milestones. If you are returning to Crimson Desert after some time away, the first thing to understand is that the game has changed shape. This is not a story add-on with a few side quests bolted on. It turns the landlocked continent of Pywel into a naval sandbox and drops an endgame challenge mode on top.
What you need before you set sail
- Charting the Unknown purchased and installed, plus Patch 2.04.00, which Pearl Abyss shipped alongside the expansion on 29 October 2026.
- A save that has cleared "Howling Hill", the 8th main questline. This is the minimum for the ocean, diving and shipbuilding path.
- "Journey's End", the final main story quest, cleared for the Kliff, Damiane and Oongka storylines, the Garden of Trials and castle content.
- A Greymane camp established at Howling Hill, plus the "Gathered Will" questline in the Greymanes' "Grounds of the Sunrise" faction line for shipbuilding; business management also requires liberating the relevant region through its faction quest.
- A backup save from before you installed the DLC if you cross-save or play on a second platform without the expansion.
One platform note worth flagging early: the Mac App Store version arrives later. Steam players on PC and Mac, along with Mac App Store buyers, must download the full game package once because of technical changes to the Mac build.
There are also market restrictions. Pearl Abyss confirmed that, after a review of content and age rating requirements, the expansion is not available in certain regions, and pre-orders in those markets were closed.

Complete "Howling Hill" to open the ocean
"Howling Hill" is the gate for the "A Wider World" ocean questline. Finish it and expand your Greymane camp past the required level, and the "A Wider World" ocean questline opens up the Great Ocean of Pywel for sailing, naval combat and establishing new Greymane strongholds. The questline introduces each part of the ocean system in turn.
Once you are through:
- Craft your own dive suit to reach deeper water, where sunken ruins, treasure and resources sit below the surface.
- Watch for sea creatures. Some will give you a ride, which is the fastest way to cover open water early before your ship is ready.
- Treat the ocean as a progression system rather than a sightseeing tour. Your first vessel is not a warship.
Unlock shipbuilding through the Greymane faction quests
Shipbuilding sits behind the "Gathered Will" questline in the Greymanes' "Grounds of the Sunrise" faction line. Once you have established the Greymane camp at Howling Hill, you can build a ship through a ship-building dispatch mission at a port or buy one directly from a Fleet Office manager/fleetmaster. Clear it after setting up camp, then gather resources and build and customise your vessel before your first real voyage.
Upgrade from basic boats toward heavier armed vessels as you take on ship-to-ship combat and faction contracts. Use your new strongholds as forward bases so you are not sailing back to Okiara Wharf for every resupply.
If you want to squeeze more out of each sailing session, the Crimson Desert Time Management Guide explains how advancing time interacts with quest and camp progression. It matters more now that travel distance has grown.
Finish "Journey's End" to unlock the character stories
Completing the final main story quest opens one individual questline per playable character in the Journal's Story tab:
- "Beyond the Margins" for Kliff
- "From the Ashes" for Damiane
- "Forged Resolve" for Oongka
Each is a self-contained story with cutscenes, so pick whichever character you actually play rather than spreading thin across all three at once.
The same completion unlocks the Garden of Trials, which is the closest thing this expansion has to a boss rush. Visit the Axiom Archive in the Abyss to start it; the archive is reached in the Abyss, so a Crimson Desert Spire of the Stars Guide is worth a read if you have not made that ascent yet. The mode runs ten Garden of Trials challenge groups, with new bosses available for rematch using Memory Fragments, so treat it as an endgame activity rather than a warm-up.
Claim the castles and set up your businesses
| Castle | How to trigger liberation |
|---|---|
| Drakesfall Castle | Complete "Journey's End", then liberate Drakesfall Castle |
| Flame Knight's Castle | Complete "Politician" (a Damiane quest), then liberate Flame Knight's Castle |
Business management unlocks through the faction quest that liberates the relevant region and sets up the Greymane camp. Do that before expecting any income to appear.
Build the home out properly while you are at it. The expanded housing lets you design the structure from the ground up, placing walls, windows and structural elements yourself rather than picking from fixed layouts.

Build trust to romance and marry
Romance is not a menu toggle. You build trust with specific NPCs over time, then pick dialogue options such as "Give a genuine compliment" or "Confess your feelings" when they become available.
Trust is built by actively interacting with certain NPCs over time rather than passively. Kliff, Damiane and Oongka can each pursue relationships with inhabitants of Pywel. Bari, the Witch of Kindness, is one confirmed option: complete each witch's Sanctum quest to open the "Romancing Witches" path, then keep interacting with Bari until dialogue options such as "Give a genuine compliment" and "Confess your feelings" become available. Close companions can also visit the Greymane Camp to spend time together, so keep the camp in good shape.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing the DLC on one platform and expecting your save to load on another. Any save made with the DLC installed cannot be loaded or cross-saved in a version without it. Keep a pre-DLC save.
- Rushing the ocean before finishing "Howling Hill" and expanding your Greymane camp past the required level. The questline simply will not appear.
- Assuming the free 5-hour trial includes the expansion. It covers the Crimson Desert Enhanced base game only, is one use per account and cannot be restarted.
- Expecting the Garden of Trials or character stories early. They are locked behind "Journey's End".
- Loading in before applying Patch 2.04.00. Apply the day-one update first if you hit launch-day issues.
The Patch 2.04.00 crimson desert update changes worth knowing
The patch is not just DLC plumbing. It adds new equipment across armour, weapons, mount and pet gear, and Abyss gear, plus new bosses with Memory Fragment rematches. There are map and combat improvements too.
On PC, the headline change is that upscaling is now separated from frame generation, giving you finer control over image quality versus performance. If you have been running a frame generation preset you never liked, revisit it.
Plan your first run through the expanded Pywel
Front-load "Howling Hill" and the "Gathered Will" faction line so ships and diving come online first. They feed everything else, including strongholds and commerce. Then push "Journey's End" to open the character stories, the Garden of Trials and both castles in one go.
If you are brand new, use the free 5-hour trial to test performance before buying, and remember it will not show you any of the DLC content.
