Adapting the feeling of playing Resident Evil instead of retelling Raccoon City is a genuinely smart angle, and an ordinary protagonist is the honest way to do it. The purist backlash was predictable, but fidelity isn't the only measure of a good adaptation. I'm curious whether the ending earns the risk.
